Environmental studies in Western Europe using overbank sediment

چکیده

There is particular concern in Western Europe about the environmental problems, and urgent and concerted international action is warranted. An evaluation of the present state of pollution requires systematic, compatible data on the present distribution as well as the preindustrial, natural distribution of chemical elements in surface environments. The appliance of overbank sediments from river plains as a sampling medium in regional geochemical mapping is discussed. A vertical section of overbank sediment reflects the history of sedimentation back through time. Samples from the upper horizons will show the present day distribution influenced by pollution, while samples taken at depth will reflect the natural environment. The experience so far indicates that overbank sediment is a suitable sampling medium for local and regional environmental geochemical studies.

Water quality, sediment, and soil characteristics near Fargo-Moorhead urban areas as affected by major flooding of the Red River of the North.

Spring flooding of the Red River of the North (RR) is common, but little information exits on how these flood events affect water and overbank sediment quality within an urban area. With the threat of the spring 2009 flood in the RR predicted to be the largest in recorded history and the concerns about the flooding of farmsteads, outbuildings, garages, and basements, the objectives of this stud...

Zn, Pb, Cu and As distribution patterns in overbank and medium-order stream sediment samples: their use in exploration and environmental geochemistry

Overbank and medium-order stream sediment samples were collected in Belgium and Luxembourg from 66 sampling locations (area of about 33,000 km) and analysed for major and trace elements among which Zn, Pb, Cu and As. At each sampling location large bulk samples were taken, namely in the lower (normally at 1⁄21.5 m depth, over an interval of about 20–40 cm) and upper (normally upper 5–25 cm) par...

McCormack-Williamson Tract Restoration Planning, Design, and Monitoring Program I Task 1: Analysis of Historic Hydrogeomorphic Conditions Final Report

A multi-proxy approach was used to examine the geomorphic dynamics and environmental history of an upper deltaic floodplain tract in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California. Three long cores were collected from the McCormack-Williamson Tract (MWT) and these cores were analyzed for bulk density, loss-on-ignition, fine (clay and silt) content, Al concentration, magnetic susceptibility, polle...

Microbeads in Sediment, Dreissenid Mussels, and Anurans in the Littoral Zone of the Upper St. Lawrence River, New York.

Global plastic production has exceeded 300 million tons per year (Plastics Europe, 2015). In the marine and freshwater environments, larger plastics abrade and photo-degrade resulting in persistent environmental microplastics that are not effectively removed by existing wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The ecological effects of microplastics on the marine environment are poorly understood, ...
