چکیده

(Biomass and chemical composition of Nitella furcata subsp. mucronata var. mucronata f. oligospira (A. Braun) R. D. Wood (Chlorophyta, Characeae) in the littoral region of Ninféias Pond, São Paulo, Southeast Brazil). Temporal variation of Nitella furcata (Roxburgh ex Bruzelius) C. Agardh emend. R. D. Wood subsp. mucronata (A. Braun) R. D. Wood var. mucronata f. oligospira (A. Braun) R. D. Wood biomass and chemical composition were studied at the Ninféias Pond (23°38’18.9” S, 46°37’16.3” W), a mesotrophic reservoir located in the Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga Biological Reserve, Municipality of São Paulo, Southeast Brazil. Plants were collected monthly from October 1996 to October 1997 at three fixed stations of reservoir’s littoral region. Charophyte biomass spatial distribution pattern did not vary significantly throughout the study period at all sampling stations. As to seasonal variation, the highest average values of the total alga biomass (98.35-266.06 g m DW) were registered during the rainy season, whereas lowest values (48.86-170.56 g m DW) were in the dry season. P values varied from 23.8 to 225.2 mg m and C from 139 to 353 mg m. During the rainy season, greatest air and water temperature, rain precipitation, turbidity and dissolved inorganic nitrogen values were measured, constituting the best conditions for charophyte growth. Water temperature and nutrient availability in the reservoir played a decisive role towards growth and accumulation of algal biomass.

(Effects of nutrient impoverishment on phytoplankton biomass: a mesocosms experimental approach in a shallow eutrophic reservoir (Garças Pond), São Paulo, southeast Brazil). Nutrient impoverishment in mesocosms was carried out in a shallow eutrophic reservoir aiming to evaluate the nutrient removal technique as a method for eutrophication reduction. Garças Pond is located in the Parque Estadual...

Study of Cytotoxic Activity of Daphne Mucronata Royle Grown in Iran

Background: Plants are a proven source of anti-tumor compounds and it is reasonable to assume that many such substances remain to be discovered. In Iranian folk medicine, ethanolic extract of the aerial parts of Daphne mucronata Royle is used against various skin disorders. Objective: In order to evaluate anti-neoplastic plants, we initiated a cytotoxic study using Daphne mucronata that is indig...

Phytochrome-mediated germination of very sensitive oospores.

The light receptor and its mode of operation were studied in photosensitive oospores of Nitella furcata subsp. megacarpa (Allen emend. Wood). Brief pulses of light activated maximal germination of post-secondary dormant oospores removed from lake sediments. Fluence response data at 12 wavelengths were used to construct an action spectrum for germination. The shape of the action spectrum with it...

Phenolic content and antioxidant property of the bark extracts of Ziziphus mucronata Willd. subsp. mucronata Willd

BACKGROUND Several plants traditionally used in treatment of a variety of infections in South Africa are reported in ethnobotanical surveys. Many of these plants including Ziziphus mucronata subsp. mucronata lack scientific reports to support their medicinal importance. METHODS The antioxidant activities and phenolic contents of the acetone, ethanol and aqueous extracts of the stems of Z. muc...

VARIATION AMONG THE SMOOTH-LEAF MARGINED JUNIPERUS OF MEXICO: ANALYSIS OF nrDNA, 4CL, ABI3 AND petN-psbM SNPs

Analyses of sequence data from three nuclear genes and one chloroplast gene region for Juniperus blancoi, J. b. var. huehuentensis, J. mucronata, J. scopulorum and J. virginiana revealed that the J. blancoi huehuentensis mucronata complex is closely allied but distinct from J. scopulorum and very distinct from J. virginiana. The combined DNA data support J. mucronata as a sibling species to J. ...
