چکیده

Simulated observations of a 10 • × 10 • field by the Microwave Anisotropy Probe (MAP) are analysed in order to separate cosmic microwave background (CMB) emission from foreground contaminants and instrumental noise and thereby determine how accurately the CMB emission can be recovered. The simulations include emission from the CMB, the kinetic and thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effects from galaxy clusters, as well as Galactic dust, free-free and synchrotron. We find that, even in the presence of these contaminating foregrounds, the CMB map is reconstructed with an rms accuracy of about 20 µK per 12.6 arcmin pixel, which represents a substantial improvement as compared to the individual temperature sensitivities of the raw data channels. We also find, for the single 10 • × 10 • field, that the CMB power spectrum is accurately recovered for ℓ < ∼ 600.

Forecasting Foreground Impact on Cosmic Microwave Background Measurements

We explore the possible impact of galactic and extragalactic foregrounds on measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We find that, given our present understanding of the foregrounds, they are unlikely to qualitatively affect the ability of the MAP and Planck satellites to determine the angular power spectrum of the CMB, the key statistic for constraining cosmological parameters. S...

Extracting cosmic microwave background polarisation from satellite astrophysical maps

We present the application of the Fast Independent Component Analysis (FastICA) technique for blind component separation to polarised astrophysical emission. We study how the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarised signal, consisting of E and B modes, can be extracted from maps affected by substantial contamination from diffuse Galactic foregrounds and instrumental noise. We perform the ana...

Phase Cross-correlation of the Wmap Ilc Map and Foregrounds

We present a circular cross-correlation tests for the phases of the Internal Linear Combination Map (ILC) and WMAP’s foregrounds for all K–W frequency bands at the range of multipoles l ≤ 50. We have found significant deviations from the expected Poissonian statistics for the ILC and the foregrounds phases. Our analysis shows that the low multipole range of the ILC power spectrum contains some ...

Extragalactic Foregrounds of the Cosmic Microwave Background: Prospects for the MAP Mission

While the major contribution to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies are the sought-after primordial fluctuations produced at the surface of last scattering, other effects produce secondary fluctuations at lower redshifts. Here, we study the extragalactic foregrounds of the CMB in the context of the upcoming MAP mission. We first survey the major extragalactic foregrounds and show...

Foreground Subtraction of Cosmic Microwave Background Maps Using Wi-fit (wavelet-based High-resolution Fitting of Internal Templates)

We present a new approach to foreground removal for CMB maps. Rather than relying on prior knowledge about the foreground components, we first extract the necessary information about them directly from the microwave sky maps by taking differences of temperature maps at different frequencies. These difference maps, which we refer to as internal templates, consist only of linear combinations of G...
