Residual C-peptide secretion and endothelial function in patients with Type II diabetes.

چکیده
Recent studies have demonstrated that C-peptide exerts beneficial effects on endothelial function. To investigate the relationship between residual pancreatic C-peptide secretion and endothelial function in patients with well controlled or poorly controlled Type II diabetes, we studied 100 patients with Type II diabetes that were free from diabetic neuropathy. In all patients, insulin resistance, residual pancreatic C-peptide secretion, endothelial function and oxidative stress were investigated using the homoeostasis model assessment (HOMA) index, glucagon bolus test, brachial reactivity, Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) and thiobarbituric acid-reacting substances (TBARS). The patients were categorized into quartiles on the basis of plasma HbA(1c) (glycated haemoglobin) concentration. Analysis of the data showed significant increases in plasma glucose concentration, HOMA index, microalbuminuria and TBARS, and significant decreases in plasma C-peptide, AUC (area under the curve) plasma C-peptide and TEAC, through the different quartiles (from the lowest to the highest HbA(1c) concentration). With regard to parameters of endothelial function, changes in diameter showed a significant declining trend through the different quartiles. Endothelial-dependent changes in diameter were independently and significantly associated with AUC C-peptide levels, TEAC and TBARS. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that patients with Type II diabetes with good residual C-peptide secretion are better protected from endothelial dysfunction that those with poor C-peptide secretion.

study of comparative effects of harmine and ghrelin agonist on insulin and c-peptide secretion
Aim and Background: The ability to secrete insulin from the islets of Langerhans on the one hand and suppress the factors that increase serum glucose concentrations on the other; It is very important in patients with metabolic disorders such as diabetes. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of harmine with ghrelin agonist (as a suppressor of insulin secretion) on insulin secretion a...
متن کاملEffect of Vitamin D Supplementation on Pancreatic Β -Cell Function in Patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and Vitamin D Deficiency: A Clinical Trial Study
Background Considering the increasing prevalence of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) as an autoimmune disease in recent years and the positive effects of vitamin D (VD) on this disease, especially the preventive effect of VD on progressive reduction of pancreatic β-cells, we aimed to investigate the effect of VD on pancreatic β-cell function in T1DM patients. Materials and Methods From Sep 2016 ...
متن کاملPostprandial C-Peptide to Glucose Ratio as a Marker of β Cell Function: Implication for the Management of Type 2 Diabetes.
C-peptide is secreted from pancreatic β cells at an equimolar ratio to insulin. Since, in contrast to insulin, C-peptide is not extracted by the liver and other organs, C-peptide reflects endogenous insulin secretion more accurately than insulin. C-peptide is therefore used as a marker of β cell function. C-peptide has been mainly used to assess the presence of an insulin-dependent state for th...
متن کاملEndothelial Vasodilator Angiotensin Receptors are Changing in Mice with Ageing
Background: The vascular function of Angiotensin II-type-2 receptors in adults is controversial. We sought their location and function in mouse aortic rings at young and old mice. Materials and Methods: Male C57Bl mice (aged 4 and 14 months) were killed by CO2. The descending thoracic aorta was cleaned and dissected into rings. Aortic rings were mounted in Krebs’ solution at 37 °C an...
متن کاملEffects of Parenteral Vitamin D on the Biomarkers of the Endothelial Function in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes and Ischemic Heart Disease: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Vitamin D deficiency is associated with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Cardiovascular diseases, in turn, are responsible for mortality of patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). We investigated whether a single parenteral dose of 25(OH) Vit D could improve the endothelial function in T2D patients with ischemic heart disease. A randomized, placebo-controlled, and double-blind trial was perf...
