Parameterization of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer

tion models, in spite of some advances, the boundary layer is still not represented realistically. Figure 1 illustrates an aspect of this problem by showing the opposing response of boundary layer (low) clouds to perturbation experiments (e.g., double CO2) in current climate models. The general problem of parameterization in fluids dates back to the first modern studies of turbulence during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. By then, it was already clear that for turbulent flows such as the atmosphere, it was not feasible (or even relevant) to try and follow every parcel of f luid in its turbulent trajectories. Instead, research should concentrate on trying to understand the statistical properties of turbulent f lows. With the advent of computers came the possibility of developing numerical models for weather and climate prediction. Numerical discretizations imply a limit for the temporal/spatial scales below which the flow cannot O ne of the main components of the climate system is the atmospheric boundary layer, which mediates the interactions between the ocean/land surface and the free atmosphere. Unified Cloud and Mixing Parameterizations of the Marine Boundary Layer: EDMF and PDF-based cloud approaches
The objectives of this project are: i) to develop a unified parameterization for the Marine Boundary Layer (MBL) and ii) to implement and test this parameterization in the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS). This unified MBL parameterization will be based on two main components: (i) the Eddy-Diffusivity Mass-Flux (EDMF) parameterization of boundary layer mixing; and ...
متن کاملLarge-eddy simulation of turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubes submerged in an emulated atmospheric boundary-layer
Turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubic obstacles has been numerically investigated using large-eddy simulation. The simulations have been performed using high-performance computations with local cluster systems. The array of cubes are fully submerged in a simulated deep rough-wall atmospheric boundary-layer with high turbulence intensity characteristics of environmental turbulent fl...

متن کاملبررسی پارامترسازی عمق لایه پایدار شبانه و تاثیر آن در آلودگی هوای یک منطقه شهری با توپوگرافی پیچیده (تهران)
Mixing height of the atmospheric boundary depends on the vertical variation of temperature in the atmosphere which includes temperature inversion (including surface and elevated inversions) that has a significant effect on air quality. The mixing height like some other meteorological variables has diurnal variations. The reason for that is its dependence on some other basic meteorological param...
متن کاملWestern Pacific Warm Pool Region Sensitivity to Convective Triggering by Boundary Layer Thermals in the NOGAPS Atmospheric GCM
The sensitivity of the atmospheric general circulation model of the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System to a parameterization of convective triggering by atmospheric boundary layer thermals is investigated. The study focuses on the western Pacific warm pool region and examines the results of seasonal integrations of the model for the winter of 1987/88. A parameterization for t...
