Firm heterogeneity within industries: how important is 'industry' to innovation?
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper we assess how important “industry” is to innovation. Our empirical estimates suggest that “industry factors” are, at most, only moderately important for R&D, innovation and innovative performance at the firm level. The results offer empirical support to recent evolutionary theorizing stressing that firms have heterogeneous innovative capabilities and hence differ in terms of performance. But from the perspective of the economy as a whole, “industry effects” are still important. This lends empirical support to the literatures on “technological regimes” and “sectoral innovation systems”. We conclude by arguing that recent evolutionary theory and the literatures on technological regimes and sectoral innovation systems complement each other and enrich our understanding of innovation. 1 I thank Martin Srholec and Bart Verspagen for helpful comments and suggestions on an earlier draft of this paper.

Heterogeneity of Firm Performance 1 Industry Learning Environments and the Heterogeneity of Firm Performance
This paper characterizes inter-industry heterogeneity in rates of learning-by-doing, and examines how industry learning rates are connected with firm performance. Using plant-level data from the US manufacturing sector, we measure the industry learning rate as the coefficient on cumulative output in a production function. We find that learning rates vary considerably among industries and are hi...

There is substantial heterogeneity across industries in the level of interdependence between new and old technologies. I propose a measure of this interdependence–an index of sequentiality in innovation–which is the transfer rate of patents in a particular industry. I find that highly sequential industries have higher profitability, higher variance of firm growth, lower exit rates, and lower ra...
