Papillary Carcinoma in a Thyroglossal Duct Cyst: A Case Report, Review of Literature, and Diagnostic Pitfalls in Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology

چکیده
The incidence of papillary carcinoma arising in a thyroglossal duct cyst is rare and occurs less than 1% of thyroglossal cysts. We report a case of cystic swelling in the mid-line neck in a young female patient. Fine needle aspiration of the cyst revealed colloid material and macrophages CT scan showed a cystic lesion with calcification. Histopathological examination of the cyst showed papillary carcinoma of the thyroid gland.

Carcinoma arising in a thyroglossal duct cyst is a rare occurrence, and was first reported by Ucherman in 1910, the most common being papillary carcinoma. The incidence of primary papillary carcinoma arising in thyroglossal duct cyst is less then1%. We report a case of papillary thyroid carcinoma occurr...

Thyroglossal duct cysts(TDC) are the most common congenital anomaly resulting in midline masses in children (70%in children and 1 % in adults). The occurrence of carcinoma is extremely rare in children as compared to adults. Because of the classical clinical findings of TDC’s preoperative diagnosis of malignancies within them are rarely done. Even fine needle aspiration cytology also less valua...

BACKGROUND We report a rare case of synchronous occurrence of thyroglossal duct cyst carcinoma and thyroid carcinoma and discuss its management in detail. METHODS A 59-year-old woman was clinically diagnosed to have a thyroglossal duct cyst and a solitary nodule. Fine-needle aspiration cytology revealed a papillary carcinoma in the thyroglossal duct cyst and a colloid in the thyroid nodule. S...

Thyroglossal duct cysts are the most common form of congenital malformation in the neck. They develop from the epithelial remnants of the thyroglossal tract and 70% is diagnosed in childhood; 7% is diagnosed in adulthood. Carcinoma arising in these remnants constitutes a very uncommon histopathological entity. The diagnosis of malignancy is made incidentally on cytopathologic studies of the exc...

INTRODUCTION Thyroglossal duct cyst carcinomas are extremely rare and their clinical presentation is similar to that of benign cysts. The diagnosis is based on physical examination, laboratory tests, and most importantly multiple imaging techniques (ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging), and fine needle aspiration cytology. PRESENTATION OF CASE We report a very ...
