Behavioral Biology and Observations of a Statary Eciton Burchelli Army Ant Colony at La Selva Biological Station
نویسنده
چکیده
Little is known of the ecology and behavioral biology of Eciton burchelli army ants at La Selva biological station, Costa Rica. A statary colony of E. burchelli was followed for seven days in July (wet season). Colony movements were recorded and entered into the La Selva GIS system. Angle of daily raids, velocity of foraging front and distance foraged were recorded. Estimates were made of number of ants in the foraging column and bivouac size. Results are compared with studies of E. burchelli at Corcovado, Costa Rica and Barro Colorado Island (BCI), Panama. Average distance traveled was similar to that found in Corcovado, but greater than that found at BCI. Daily angle of foraging column from the bivouac appeared random but data were limited. There is much room for further research on the behavioral biology of E. burchelli, particularly at La Selva. Additional work addressing the relation between resource availability and foraging behavior is warranted, as is further work on the communication mechanisms underlying the maintenance of organization and efficiency within army ant swarms.

Pattern Formation and Optimization in Army Ant Raids
Army ant colonies display complex foraging raid patterns involving thousands of individuals communicating through chemical trails. In this article we explore, by means of a simple search algorithm, the properties of these trails in order to test the hypothesis that their structure reflects an optimized mechanism for exploring and exploiting food resources. The raid patterns of three army ant sp...
متن کاملCommunity Sampling and Integrative Taxonomy Reveal New Species and Host Specificity in the Army Ant-Associated Beetle Genus Tetradonia (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae, Aleocharinae)
Army ant colonies host a diverse community of arthropod symbionts. Among the best-studied symbiont communities are those of Neotropical army ants of the genus Eciton. It is clear, however, that even in these comparatively well studied systems, a large proportion of symbiont biodiversity remains unknown. Even more striking is our lack of knowledge regarding the nature and specificity of these ho...

The causes of biological gigantism have received much attention, but only for individual organisms. What selection pressures might favour the evolution of gigantic societies? Here we consider the largest singlequeen insect societies, those of the Old World army ant Dorylus, single colonies of which can have 20 million workers. We propose that colony gigantism in Dorylus arises as a result of an...
متن کاملGeographic Variation in Host Location Cues for a Dipteran Parasitoid of Paraponera clavata1
Parasitoid insects face considerable trade-offs in locating suitable hosts within complex environments. Apocephalus paraponerae (Diptera: Phoridae) locates its host ant Paraponera clavata (Formicidae: Ponerinae) using olfactory cues. Here, comparing two populations of A. paraponerae, I describe differences in host location cues between two sites, Barro Colorado Island (BCI) in Panama and La Sel...
متن کاملSelf-organized lane formation and optimized traffic flow in army ants.
We show how the movement rules of individual ants on trails can lead to a collective choice of direction and the formation of distinct traffic lanes that minimize congestion. We develop and evaluate the results of a new model with a quantitative study of the behaviour of the army ant Eciton burchelli. Colonies of this species have up to 200 000 foragers and transport more than 3000 prey items p...
