چکیده

We consider the contribution of neutron stars and black holes to the dynamical mass of galactic halos. In particular, we show that if these compact objects were produced by an early generation of stars with initial metallicity ∼< 10 Z⊙, they can contribute up to 30–40% of the Galactic halo mass without violating constraints from chemical evolution. This scenario is consistent with the recent results on halo microlensing, the presence of enriched hot gas in clusters and groups of galaxies, and other observations in the context of this model.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

We compute and present the distribution in mass of single and binary neutron stars, strange stars, and black holes. The calculations were performed using a stellar population synthesis code. We follow all phases of single and binary evolution, starting from a ZAMS binary and ending in the creation of one compact object (neutron star, black hole, strange star) and a white dwarf, or two compact o...

Prompt Mergers of Neutron Stars with Black Holes

Mergers of neutron stars with black holes have been suggested as candidates for short gamma-ray bursts. They have also been studied for their potential as gravitational wave sources observable with ground-based detectors. For these purposes, it is important to know under what circumstances such a merger could leave an accretion disk or result in a period of stable mass transfer. We show that, c...

High Frequency QPOs in Neutron Stars and Black Holes: Probing Dense Matter and Strong Gravitational Fields

Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) have been discovered in the X-ray emission of many neutron stars and black holes. The QPOs with frequencies ∼> 300 Hz are thought to be produced near the surfaces of neutron stars and the event horizons of black holes. I first summarize some of the most important properties of the QPOs seen in neutron star and black hole systems. I then review some of the mode...
