A Comparison of Univariate Time Series Methods for Forecasting Intraday Arrivals at a Call Center

چکیده
Predictions of call center arrivals are a key input to staff scheduling models. It is, therefore, surprising that simplistic forecasting methods dominate practice, and that the research literature on forecasting arrivals is so small. In this paper, we evaluate univariate time series methods for forecasting intraday arrivals for lead times from one half-hour ahead to two weeks ahead. We analyze five series of intraday arrivals for call centers operated by a retail bank in the UK. A notable feature of these series is the presence of both an intraweek and an intraday seasonal cycle. The methods considered include seasonal ARIMA modeling; periodic AR modeling; an extension of Holt-Winters exponential smoothing for the case of two seasonal cycles; robust exponential smoothing based on exponentially weighted least absolute deviations regression; and dynamic harmonic regression, which is a form of unobserved component state space modeling. Our results indicate strong potential for the use of seasonal ARIMA modeling and the extension of Holt-Winters for predicting up to about two to three days ahead and that, for longer lead times, a simplistic historical average is difficult to beat. We find a similar ranking of methods for call center data from an Israeli

Interday Forecasting and Intraday Updating of Call Center Arrivals
Accurate forecasting of call arrivals is critical for staffing and scheduling of a telephone call center. We develop methods for interday and dynamic intraday forecasting of incoming call volumes. Our approach is to treat the intraday call volume profiles as a highdimensional vector time series. We propose to first reduce the dimensionality by singular value decomposition of the matrix of histo...
متن کاملThe impact of special days in call arrivals forecasting: A neural network approach to modelling special days
A key challenge for call centres remains the forecasting of high frequency call arrivals collected in hourly or shorter time buckets. In addition to the complex intraday, intraweek and intrayear seasonal cycles, call arrival data typically contain a large number of anomalous days, driven by the occurrence of holidays, special events, promotional activities and system failures. This study evalua...
متن کاملExponentially Weighted Methods for Forecasting Intraday Time Series with Multiple Seasonal Cycles
This paper introduces five new univariate exponentially weighted methods for forecasting intraday time series that consist of both intraweek and intraday seasonal cycles. Applications of relevance include forecasting volumes of call centre arrivals, transportation, e-mail traffic and electricity load. The first method that we develop extends an exponential smoothing formulation that has been us...
متن کاملDensity Forecasting of Intraday Call Center Arrivals Using Models Based on Exponential Smoothing
A key input to the call center staffing process is a forecast for the number of calls arriving. Density forecasts of arrival rates are needed for analytical call center models, which assume Poisson arrivals with a stochastic arrival rate. Density forecasts of call volumes can be used in simulation models, and are also important for the analysis of outsourcing contracts. A forecasting method, th...
متن کاملForecasting Call Center Arrivals: a Comparative Study
We evaluate alternative time series methods for forecasting future call volumes in call centers. Our methods take into account both interday (day-to-day) and intraday (within day) dependence structures, and allow for real-time dynamic updates. We also propose a new model which exploits correlations between the arrival processes of two separate queues, leading to more accurate forecasts. We desc...
