Real-time estimation of aquaplaning with an optical tyre sensor

چکیده
Future active safety systems will require more accurate information about the state of a vehicle and the operating conditions of an individual tyre. Aquaplaning is a dangerous situation in which the contact between the tyre and the road is partially or completely lost. In this paper, the movements of the inner liner of the tyre during aquaplaning are measured optically and exploited to estimate aquaplaning. The results from proving-ground tests are shown and compared with those of the conventional approach of estimating aquaplaning from wheel speeds. The proposed method performs reliably in real time and can detect several different levels of aquaplaning. The results support the future development of productioncapable tyre sensors. An optical tyre sensor also provides a research tool for attaining an indepth understanding of the aquaplaning phenomenon.

Three 3-axial Accelerometers Fixed inside the Tyre for Studying Contact Patch Deformations in Wet Conditions
The tyre-road contact area was studied visually by means of a high-speed camera and three accelerometers fixed to the inner liner of the tyre carcass. Both methods show a distorted contact area in wet conditions, but interesting differences appeared. First, the contact area in full aquaplaning seems strongly distorted on a glass plate when subjected to visual inspection, while accelerometers in...
متن کاملPredicting Aquaplaning Performance from Tyre Profile Images with Machine Learning
The tread of a tyre consists of a profile (pattern of grooves, sipes, and blocks) mainly designed to improve wet performance and to inhibit aquaplaning by providing a conduit for water to be expelled underneath the tyre as it makes contact with the road surface. Testing different tread profile designs is time consuming, as it requires fabrication of a tyre set using the tread profile, followed ...
متن کاملDetection of Fuel Adulteration in Real Time Using Optical Fiber Sensor and Peripheral Interface Controller
Detection of fuel adulteration in real time is the most important need of the world as it generates the hazardous effects on the environment, living and nonliving things. Various automotive users and fuel providers may mix kerosene in petrol and diesel. Adulterated fuel increases air pollution, as well as reduces the performance of vehicle engines. Such a malpractice in fuel is prevailing becau...

An original method for the real-time estimation of the roll angle using low-cost sensors in two-wheeled vehicles is proposed. The roll angle greatly affects the dynamics of singletrack vehicles and its estimation is essential in control systems such as ABS, Traction Control, as well as Curve and Collision Warning, or even active suspensions. The proposed method uses a non-linear Kalman filter, ...
