چکیده
Levels of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) measured in human samples have increased in recent years, but the health effects of these compounds are not well studied. A group of persistent pol lutants similar in structure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), PBDEs are thought to affect endocrine function, but this relation ship has only been examined in several small studies. A new study significantly expands this knowledge base by analyzing PBDE expo sure among a large cohort of male sport-fish consumers and conclud ing that these exposures are associated with increased thyroglobulin antibodies and increased thyroxine (T4) in adult males independent of PCB exposure [EHP 116:1635–1641; Turyk et al.].

The effect of shoreline recreational angling activities on aquatic and riparian habitat within an urban environment: implications for conservation and management.
There is growing concern that recreational shoreline angling activity may negatively impact littoral and riparian habitats independent of any direct or indirect influences of fish harvest or fishing mortality through mechanisms such as disturbance (e.g., trampling, erosion) and pollution (e.g., littering). We sampled a suite of aquatic and terrestrial variables (i.e., water quality, aquatic and...

Information about the socioeconomic drivers of Silurus glanis anglers in the UK were collected using questionnaires from a cross section of mixed cyprinid fisheries to elucidate human dimensions in angling and non-native fisheries management. Respondents were predominantly male (95%), 30-40 years of age with <10 yr angling experience for S. glanis; most had received college rather than universi...
متن کاملBlood lactate loads of redthroat emperor Lethrinus miniatus associated with angling stress and exhaustive exercise.
Baseline, post-angling and maximum attainable blood lactate concentrations were measured for the fishery species redthroat emperor Lethrinus miniatus to gain insight into the condition of fish released following c. 30 s angling and <45 s air exposure. Mean ± S.D. baseline blood lactate was 1·5 ± 0·6 mmol l⁻¹, which increased and plateaued around 6 mmol l⁻¹ at 15-30 min post-angling. These value...
متن کاملEffect of catch-and-release angling on growth of largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides
Catch-and-release angling is popular in many parts of the world and plays an increasingly important role in management of recreational fisheries. Although the magnitude of catch-and-release mortality is well documented for many species, potential sublethal effects have been little studied. An experiment was conducted to assess directly the effects of catch-and-release angling on growth of large...
متن کاملThe influence of selection for vulnerability to angling on foraging ecology in largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides.
Several traits related to foraging behaviour were assessed in young-of-the-year produced from largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides that had been exposed to four generations of artificial selection for vulnerability to angling. As recreational angling may target foraging ability, this study tested the hypothesis that selection for vulnerability to angling would affect behaviours associated with...
