چکیده

We have been using histological and electrophysiological techniques to compare the pathology and pathophysiology in different forms of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) in the Lewis rat. In acute EAE induced by sensitization to myelin basic protein (MBP) or by the passive transfer of MBPspecific lymphocytes, there is inflammation and demyelination in the ventral and dorsal spinal roots and inflammation and limited demyelination in the spinal cord. More extensive spinal cord demyelination as well as demyelination in the spinal roots and ganglia is observed in acute EAE induced by inoculation with whole central nervous system (CNS) tissue. In chronic relapsing EAE induced by inoculation with whole CNS tissue and treatment with low dose cyclosporin A, large plaques of spinal cord demyelination occur in rats with clinical episodes >28 days after inoculation. In rats with clinical disease <25 days after inoculation there is prominent demyelination in the spinal roots and ganglia as well as in the spinal cord. In all 4 forms of EAE, peripheral nervous system (PNS) remyelination by Schwann cells and CNS remyelination by oligodendrocytes occurs during clinical recovery. Electrophysiological studies revealed PNS and CNS nerve conduction abnormalities during clinical episodes, with improvement during remissions.

The pathophysiology of acute experimental allergic encephalomyelitis induced by whole spinal cord in the Lewis rat.

Histological and electrophysiological studies were performed on Lewis rats with acute experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) induced by inoculation with guinea-pig spinal cord and Freund's adjuvants, in order to determine the cause of the neurological signs. These studies demonstrated demyelination-induced nerve conduction block in the large and also the smaller diameter fibres at the ve...

Involvement of the dorsal root ganglion in acute experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in the Lewis rat. A histological and electrophysiological study.

Histological and electrophysiological studies were performed in Lewis rats with acute experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) in order to determine the extent of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) involvement. Histological studies showed inflammation and demyelination in both the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). The DRG was the most affected region of the PNS and ...

The pathophysiology of myelin basic protein-induced acute experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in the Lewis rat.

Histological and electrophysiological studies were performed on Lewis rats with acute experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) induced by inoculation with guinea-pig myelin basic protein (MBP) and Freund's adjuvant. The histological studies showed demyelination in the lumbar, sacral and coccygeal dorsal and ventral spinal roots and to a lesser extent in the spinal cord, including the dorsa...

Effect of Honey Bee Venom on Lewis Rats with Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis, a Model for Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive and autoimmune neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system (CNS). This disease is recognized through symptoms like inflammation, demyelination and the destruction of neurological actions. Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) is a widely accepted animal model for MS. EAE is created in animals by injecting the tissue of myelin basic...
