Friction and wear during twin-disc experiments under ambient and cryogenic conditions

چکیده
We present a classical rolling contact apparatus where two discs roll and slide under a constant normal loading. Experimental results concerning bearing steel used in ambient air or under severe temperature conditions (Liquid Nitrogen) are presented. A simplified model proposed by Kalker (Fastsim) is used to identify the dynamic friction coefficient between these discs and to study the apparatus parameters influence on dissipated energy. Wear evolution is simulated using classical Archard’s law and compared to measured profiles. Influence of ambient conditions is highlighted by comparing friction and wear coefficients.

Experimental Investigation by Cryogenic Treatment of Aluminium 6063 and 8011 and NiCoW Coating to Improve Hardness and Wear (TECHNICAL NOTE)
The aim of this paper is to focus on the effect of cryogenic treatment on the microstructure, mechanical and wear properties of Al 6061 and Al 8011. The first objective was to understand the degree to which hardness of these aluminium grades have been enhanced by giving cryogenic on the specimens. The second objective is to check the wear resistance property of these two aluminium specimens i...
متن کاملAnalysis of Wear Phenomena in Sliding Contact Surfaces
A general approach to numerically simulating wear in rolling and sliding contacts is presented in this thesis. A simulation scheme is developed that calculates the wear at a detailed level. The removal of material follows Archard‟s wear law, which states that the reduction of volume is linearly proportional to the sliding distance, the normal load and the wear coefficient Careful attention is p...
متن کاملNano- and Macroscale Evidence of Thermally Activated Friction
The recent availability of very low wear materials that undergo primarily interfacial sliding has enabled studies that more directly probe the fundamental aspects of friction. This paper reports on variable temperature experiments that were conducted with common polymeric and lamellar solid lubricant materials. Friction coefficient consistently increased with decreased temperature well into the...

The friction and wear performance of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE) and pure poly-ether-etherketone(PEEK) polymers were comparatively evaluated under dry sliding and cacao drops lubrication. The sliding experiments were carried out on a pin-on-disc tribometer. The contact configuration used was a polymer pin on a rotating stainless steel disc. Wear tests were carried out at ro...
