چکیده

In this Wednesday night section for Algebraic Number Theory, we will go through basic facts about one dimensional formal groups and hopefully get to see how they might be useful and interesting. All rings are commutative with identity. The sources of this material are my notes from Elliptic Curves, a course taught by Tom Fisher at Cambridge last year, J. Silverman’s Elliptic Curves Book. A few things I worked out myself though they’re surely out there somewhere.

Endomorphism rings of almost full formal groups

Let oK be the integral closure of Zp in a finite field extension K of Qp, and let F be a one-dimensional full formal group defined over oK . We study certain finite subgroups C of F and prove a conjecture of Jonathan Lubin concerning the absolute endomorphism ring of the quotient F/C when F has height 2. We also investigate ways in which this result can be generalized to p-adic formal groups of...

Canonical and filling subgroups of formal groups

Let F be a one-dimensional full or almost full p-adic formal group. We look for finite subgroups C of F for which the quotient formal group F/C is full. In particular, we investigate the connection between such groups and the congruence-torsion subgroups of F described in Lubin, 1979. In doing so, we prove a conjecture of Jonathan Lubin concerning this relationship when F

The Geometry of Formal Varieties in Algebraic Topology I

Algebraic topology is full of computations with rings, and where we find rings we should seek geometry through methods of algebraic geometry. The geometry of formal varieties turn out to organize many interesting computations in topology, and certain formal varieties called commutative, one-dimensional formal groups give the best global picture of stable homotopy theory currently available. I w...

Isogenies, power operations, and homotopy theory

The modern understanding of the homotopy theory of spaces and spectra is organized by the chromatic philosophy, which relates phenomena in homotopy theory with the moduli of one-dimensional formal groups. In this paper, we describe how certain phenomena in K(n)-local homotopy can be computed from knowledge of isogenies of deformations of formal groups of height n. Mathematics Subject Classifica...

Three-dimensional Free Vibration Analysis of a Transversely Isotropic Thermoelastic Diffusive Cylindrical Panel

The present paper is aimed to study an exact analysis of the free vibrations of a simply supported, homogeneous, transversely isotropic, cylindrical panel based on three-dimensional generalized theories of thermoelastic diffusion. After applying the displacement potential functions in the basic governing equations of generalized thermoelastic diffusion, it is noticed that a purely transverse mo...
