چکیده

overview of oral sucrose analgesia for infants. The administration of oral sucrose, with or without nonnutritive sucking (NNS), has been the most frequently studied nonpharmacological intervention for relief of procedural pain in neonates. Oral sucrose has a beneficial role in pain prevention and management for infants, including babies in the emergency department. Although most research on oral sucrose has been conducted in newborn nurseries and neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), we present 2 case reports that illustrate use of oral sucrose in pediatric and cardiac intensive care units and the variable responses of the patients.

Adding cocoa to sucrose: the effect on cold pain tolerance.

The sweet taste of sucrose acts as an analgesic, whereas the taste of a bitter substance decreases pain tolerance. The present experiment explores the analgesic effect of a complex taste and asks how adding cocoa, a substance often associated with sweet foods but that has a bitter taste, to a sucrose solution affects cold pain tolerance. The 24 male participants were exposed to Cold Pressor Tes...

Antinociception induced by acute oral administration of sweet substance in young and adult rodents: The role of endogenous opioid peptides chemical mediators and μ1-opioid receptors

The present work aimed to investigate the effects of acute sucrose treatment on the perception of painful stimuli. Specifically, we sought to determine the involvement of the endogenous opioid peptide-mediated system as well as the role of the μ(1)-opioid receptor in antinociception organisation induced by acute sucrose intake. Nociception was assessed with the tail-flick test in rats (75, 150 ...

Patterns of Sweet Taste Liking: A Pilot Study

Two distinct patterns of sweet taste liking have been described: one showing a peak liking response in the mid-range of sucrose concentrations and the other showing a monotonic liking response at progressively higher sucrose concentrations. Classification of these patterns has been somewhat arbitrary. In this report, we analyzed patterns of sweet taste liking in a pilot study with 26 adults inc...

Effect of non-sucrose sweet tasting solution on neonatal heel prick responses.

A substance commercially described as 'sugar free,' used as a sweetener for paracetamol suspension, was evaluated on measures of neonatal pain. Sixty infants were randomly allocated to receive one of four solutions before heel stab blood sampling: sterile water (placebo); 25 or 50% sucrose (weight/volume); and the commercial sweet-tasting solution. There was a significant reduction in crying ti...

Temperature systematically modifies neural activity for sweet taste.

Temperature can modify neural and behavioral responses to taste stimuli that elicit "sweetness," a perception linked to intake of calorie-laden foods. However, the role of temperature in the neural representation of sweet taste is poorly understood. Here we made electrophysiological recordings from gustatory neurons in the medulla of inbred mice to study how adjustments in taste solution temper...
