Stress orientation evaluated from strain localisation analysis in Aigion fault

چکیده
Within the frame of the ‘CRL’ (Corinth Rift Laboratory project) (Cornet et al, 2004a) centered on the south western sector of the Gulf of Corinth (http://www.corinth-rift-lab.org), fault zone cores from the active Aigion fault have been collected continuously from depths between 708 m to 782 m. Inside this clayey core, a clear shearing surface with marked slip lines is visible on a plane that makes a 68° angle with respect to the core axis. This failure surface was not induced by the decompression process but is indeed a slip plane as clear striation is observed at the interface. On the basis of an elastoplastic constitutive model calibrated on triaxial tests on the clayey gouge, it is shown that shear band formation inside the clayey core is possible. The solution for the orientation of the shear band is compared to the orientation of an existing slip surface inside the clayey gouge and this result is used to deduce the orientation of the principal stresses. It is shown that as commonly observed in weak fault zones, the orientation of the principal stresses is locally almost parallel and perpendicular to the fault axis.

Structural analyses of fault planes using fault slickenlines and calcite e-twins data from the Dasht-e-Arjan graben, SW Iran
Dasht-e-Arjan is a northeast trending graben located 65 km west of Shiraz. It was formed along active segments of the Korrehbas fault, perpendicularly to the Shahnesh in and Salamati anticlines. Oriented sampling from bordering fault planes and striations was carried out to evaluate the relative amounts of paleostress/strain needed to form the graben. Measurements of e-twins and c-axis of calci...
متن کاملThe Effect of Fault Plane on the Horizontal In Situ Stresses Orientation: a Case Study in one of Iranian Oilfield
Knowledge of the orientation of horizontal in situ stresses is important to some areas of oil and gas field development plans. Borehole breakouts observed in image logs and drilling-induced fractures are the main parameters for the determination of the stresses’ directions in situ. In this work, the orientations of borehole breakouts were investigated as a function of depth in oil wells A and ...

This study investigates the time-dependent long-term creep strain in a composite cylinder made of glass/vinylester with a unidirectional ply. The cylinder is subjected to an internal pressure and the boundary condition is free–free and acts as thermal insulation. The classical lamination theory (CLT) is used to derive the governing equations as a second-order equation to determine the radial, c...

Three-dimensional mechanical models are used to evaluate the performance of different fault growth criteria in predicting successive growth of three échelon thrust faults similar to the segments of the Puente Hills thrust system of the Los Angeles basin, California. Four sequential Boundary Element Method models explore the growth of successive échelon faults within the system by simulating sna...

Finite-element (FE) analysis is an efficient aid in the design optimisation of modern electronic devices. Simulation tools have dramatically reduced the product design cycle. The model validated with actual prototypes can also be used for other purposes such as failure analysis, fatigue prediction, reliability studies, etc. In this paper we present a case study of application of FE model in fau...
