ZEN and the search for high–redshift galaxies

چکیده
We present the ZEN (z equals nine) survey: a deep, narrow J-band search for proto-galactic Lyα emission at redshifts z ∼ 9 . In the first phase of the survey, dubbed ZEN1, we combine an exceptionally deep image of the Hubble Deep Field South, obtained using a narrow band filter centred on the wavelength 1.187μm, with existing deep, broad band images covering optical to near infrared wavelengths. Candidate z ∼ 9 Lyα-emitting galaxies display a significant narrow band excess relative to the Js–band that are undetected at optical wavelengths. We detect no sources consistent with this criterion to the 90% point source flux limit of the NB image, FNB = 3.28 × 10 −18 ergs s cm. The survey selection function indicates that we have sampled a volume of approximately 340h Mpc to a Lyα emission luminosity of 10h ergs s. When compared to the predicted properties of z ∼ 9 galaxies based upon no evolution of observed z ∼ 6 Lyα-emitting galaxies, the ‘volume shortfall’ of the current survey, i.e. the volume required to detect this putative population, is a factor of at least 8 to 10. We also discuss continuing narrow J-band imaging surveys that will reduce the volume shortfall factor to the point where the no-evolution prediction from z ∼ 6 is probed in a meaningful manner.

EMISSION-LINE OBJECTS FROM A PRELIMINARY UKST OBJECTIVE PRISM SURVEY
A visual search has been made of four fields using United Kingdom 1.2m Schmidt Objective Prism plates with a reciprocal dispersion of 1 180 A/mm at HP. Such plate material is ideally suited to searches for emission-line galaxies. We present a catalogue of 53 emission-line objects, which comprises 45 galaxies, where individual HI1 regions are resolved in 16 bright galaxies; 8 are emission li...
متن کاملZEN 2 : A narrow J - band search for z ∼ 9 Ly α emitting galaxies directed towards three lensing clusters
We present the results of a continuing survey to detect Lyα emitting galaxies at redshifts z ∼ 9 : the ZEN (“z equals nine”) survey. We have obtained deep VLT/ISAAC observations in the narrow J–band filter NB119 directed towards three massive lensing clusters: Abell clusters 1689, 1835, and 114. The foreground clusters provide a magnified view of the distant universe and permit a sensitive test...
متن کاملDASTWAR: a tool for completeness estimation in magnitude-size plane
Today, great observatories around the world, devote a substantial amount of observing time to sky surveys. The resulted images are inputs of source finder modules. These modules search for the target objects and provide us with source catalogues. We sought to quantify the ability of detection tools in recovering faint galaxies regularly encountered in deep surveys. Our approach was based on com...
متن کاملStrong Gravitational Lens Candidates in the Goods Acs Fields
We present results from a systematic search for strong gravitational lenses in the GOODS ACS data. The search technique involves creating a sample of likely lensing galaxies, which we define as massive early-type galaxies in a redshift range 0.3 < z < 1.3. The target galaxies are selected by color and magnitude, giving a sample of 1092 galaxies. For each galaxy in the sample, we subtract a smoo...
متن کاملA systematic search for lensed high-redshift galaxies in HST images of MACS clusters
We present the results of a 135-arcmin2 search for high-redshift galaxies lensed by 29 clusters from the MAssive Cluster and extended MAssive Cluster Surveys. We use relatively shallow images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope in four passbands, namely, F606W, F814W, F110W, and F140W. We identify 130 F814W dropouts as candidates for galaxies at z 6. In order to fit the available broad-ban...
