چکیده

Introduction In an electron storage ring, neutrons are generated as a result of the electron beam interaction with high-Z materials, such as scrapers and collimators [1]. When the energy of the incident electron beam is sufficiently high, it can produce high-energy photons, which subsequently interact with a nucleus, resulting in the emission of nucleons. This interaction is known as a photonuclear interaction. For photons with energies above the typical binding energy of nucleons (>5-15 MeV), photonuclear interaction generally leads to emission of photoneutrons as well as photoprotons. Photonuclear interaction is mainly the result of three specific processes: giant nuclear dipole resonance, quasi-deuteron production and decay, and intranuclear cascade generated via photopion production.

Radiation-Induced Demagnetization of Nd-Fe-B Permanent Magnets

Introduction The Advanced Photon Source (APS), as well as other third-generation synchrotron light sources, uses permanent magnets in the insertion devices to produce x-rays for scientific research [1,2]. When placed in a high-energy storage ring, these permanent magnets are subjected to irradiation from synchrotron radiation, high-energy bremsstrahlung, and bremsstrahlung-produced neutrons. Pr...

An Overview of the Aps 352-mhz Rf Systems

The Advanced Photon Source (APS) is a 7-GeV full energy positron storage ring for generating synchrotron radiation with an injector. The booster synchrotron rf system consists of a single 1-MW klystron which drives four five-cell cavities at 352 MHz. The storage ring cavities consist of four groups of four single cells powered by two 1-MW klystrons for 100-mA operation. An overview of the opera...

An investigation into the potential applicability of gel dosimeters for dosimetry in boron neutron capture therapy

Background: The aim of this work was to establish how well gel dosimeters performed, as substitutes for brain tissue compared with standard phantom materials such as water, polymethyl-methacrylate (or PMMA), A150 plastic and TE- liquid phantom material for dosimetry of neutron beams in boron neutron capture therapy. Materials and Methods: Thermal neutron fluence, photon dose and epithermal neu...

An Operator Training Facility at the Advanced Photon Source*

The Advanced Photon Source (APS), a premier thirdgeneration synchrotron radiation source, presently operates in top-up mode during most user run time. During top-up mode, charge is injected into the storage ring at approximately 2-minute intervals to stabilize the stored beam current to within 0.1%. Top-up mode requires the dedicated use of the entire APS injector system, severely limiting time...

Applicability of self-activation of an NaI scintillator for measurement of photo-neutrons around a high-energy X-ray radiotherapy machine.

The applicability of the activation of an NaI scintillator for neutron monitoring at a clinical linac was investigated experimentally. Thermal neutron fluence rates are derived by measurement of the I-128 activity generated in an NaI scintillator irradiated by neutrons; β-rays from I-128 are detected efficiently by the NaI scintillator. In order to verify the validity of this method for neutron...
