چکیده

The starting assumption is that consciousness (subjective experience), rather than being an epiphenomenon, has a causal role in the optimization of certain human behaviors. After briefl y outlining some of the critical properties of consciousness, this chapter reviews empirical studies that demonstrate how much can be achieved in the way of action and decision making in the absence of relevant conscious experience. Thereafter, it considers, in detail, the experience of action and suggests that this has two key components: the experience of being an agent, which causes events in the world, and the belief that we could have done otherwise. Such experiences enable us to justify our behavior to ourselves and to others and, in the longer term, to create a cultural narrative about responsibility. Finally, the experience of regret is explored (i.e., the recognition that one could and should have acted otherwise). Regret is a powerful, negative emotion that is suggested to integrate group norms and preferences with those of the individual. The transparent and embodied nature of the experience of regret ensures that cultural norms become an inescapable part of the self-narrative. The conclusion is that conscious experience is necessary for optimizing fl exible intrapersonal interactions and for the emergence of cumulative culture. The Problem Family

no less vital than his earlier works. Once again he tells us that there are no problem children? only problem parents. Mr. Neill is sincere and alive; he knows what he believes and is not afraid to say so. There is so much that is good in what he says, that it seems a pity he should spoil so much of his work by expressing half-truths in a somewhat dogmatic fashion. Few would disagree with his s...

The editorial is commendable and I agree with many of the points raised. Management is an important aspect of health system strengthening which is often overlooked. In order to build the capacity of management, we need to consider other factors such as, the environment within which managers work, their numbers, support systems and distribution. Effective leadership is an issue which cannot be o...

The Sin of Onan: contraception

"Onanism," the term derived from Genesis 38:9-10 which in traditional Christian usage has designated both masturbation and unnatural intercourse between a man and woman, is not exactly a pleasant theme to write about. And in a sense, that fact itself is the short answer to those who claim that these sorts of acts are ethically indifferent or innocent. In other words, the spontaneous negative em...

It has not been examined as thoroughly as consciousness and largely remains a ...

The Problem of Evil in the Thought of Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Throughout all of Rousseau’s works there is tension between reason and conscience. Reason binds men when they think correctly, but divides them when they place it at the service of self-interest. Conversely, the universality of conscience is immediate and transparent: it transmits the truth of the existence of God and of the universal principles that underlie human action, despite the differenc...
