Hexahedral mesh development of free-formed geometry: The human femur exemplified
نویسندگان
چکیده
The objective of the present research is to develop a standard hexahedral Finite Element (FE) model of the human femur accounting for the material characteristics of cortical bone, cancellous bone and bone marrow. The anatomical data were acquired from the Visible Human Project. A detailed outline of the steps necessary in developing hexahedral FE meshes from computed tomography (CT) data is provided, along with a section on modelling strategies providing comprehensive suggestions on how to overcome meshing difficulties due to geometrical non-linearities. The stress and deformation results are discussed. Published by Elsevier Ltd

Hexahedral Mesh Generation for the Simulation of the Human Mandible
A combinatorial approach for the generation of hexahedral meshes by means of successive dual cycle elimination has been proposed by the second author in previous work. We provide a case study for the applicability of our hexahedral mesh generation approach to the simulation of physiological stress scenarios of the human mandible. Due to its complex and very detailed free-form geometry, the mand...
متن کاملAutomated Hexahedral Mesh Generation by Swept Volume Decomposition and Recomposition
In this paper a method is presented to generate uniform hexahedral meshes automatically. In this method, a solid model with complex geometry is decomposed into swept volumes with simpler geometry. A sweepable face on the solid model is selected as the generator face to generate a swept volume. Each generator face is specified with node density and a quadrilateral mesh is generated from it. Then...
متن کاملConforming Hexahedral Mesh Generation via Geometric Capture Methods
An algorithm is introduced for converting a non-conforming hexahedral mesh that is topologically equivalent and geometrically similar to a given geometry into a conforming mesh for the geometry. The procedure involves embedding geometric topology information into the given non-conforming base mesh and then converting the mesh to a fundamental hexahedral mesh. The procedure is extensible to mult...
متن کاملConstructing hexahedral shell meshes via volumetric polycube maps
Shells are three-dimensional structures. One dimension, the thickness, is much smaller than the other two dimensions. Shell structures can be widely found in many real-world objects. This paper presents a method to construct a layered hexahedral mesh for shell objects. Given a closed 2-manifold and the user-specified thickness, we construct the shell space using the distance field and then para...
متن کاملAutomatic Hexahedral Sweep Mesh Generation of Open Volumes
Open volumes with partial surface geometry are often encountered in the industry while modifying or morphing legacy meshes or while creating meshes in structural recesses or void regions. The paper describes an algorithm for auto-generating hexahedral meshes on these open volumes without the need for laborious CAD repairs. Based on the available input, the open volumes are first topologically c...
