چکیده

Our aim was to establish a reliable, functional surgical technique for soft palate closure. A step-by-step description of the operative procedure is presented. A cross-over procedure has been developed by combining the principles of a mucosal Z-plasty only on the oral side of the cleft palate, the intravelar veloplasty following Sommerlad's principles and a straight line closure on the nasal side. In the last 2 years, 25 patients have undergone the operation at the Cleft Centre of the 1st Paediatric Department of the Semmelweis University Budapest, Hungary. In all cases the operative technique could be adapted, operations were uneventful and straightforward. This technique was appropriate to close all the soft palate clefts, even the wide ones. This procedure combines the advantages of both procedures and has shown very good early postoperative results.

Timing of Tympanostomy Tube Placement and Efficacy of Palatoplasty Technique on the Resolution of Chronic Otitis Media: A Cross-sectional Analysis

BACKGROUND Chronic otitis media with effusion is a persistent complication essentially universal in children with cleft palate. The prevalence of chronic otitis media with effusion is hypothesized to be a result of Eustachian tube dysfunction secondary to the anomalous insertion of the palatal musculature. This study was designed to evaluate the timing of tympanostomy tube placement and the eff...

Evaluation of two palate repair techniques for the surgical management of velopharyngeal insufficiency.

BACKGROUND The Furlow palatoplasty is commonly used for the correction of velopharyngeal insufficiency in cleft patients. An alternative procedure is introduced involving a single Z-plasty with overlapping intravelar veloplasty (Woo palatoplasty). This study compared the results of both techniques in the correction of velopharyngeal insufficiency. METHODS After institutional review board appr...

A Ringed Fascia Lata Graft Without Peritendinous Areolar Tissue Encircling the Levator Veli Palatini and Superior Pharyngeal Constrictor Muscles Gradually Shrinks to Reduce Velopharyngeal Incompetence, Functioning as an Intravelar Palatal Lift

INTRODUCTION We have previously reported that fascia lata grafts with peritendinous areolar tissue used to treat severe congenital blepharoptosis gradually shrink within 6 weeks postoperatively and maintain long-term shrinkage of 15.5% on average. Accordingly, it seemed possible that a fascia lata graft without peritendinous areolar tissue would shrink more than the one with peritendinous areol...
