چکیده

Schlemm's canal (Sinus venous sclerae) of human fetuses and postnatal monkeys (Macaca fuscata) were observed with the light and electron microscope. Between the 21st and 24th week of gestation of the fetuses, many branches of Schlemm's vascular plexus at the sclerocorneal junction, which is immatured form of Schlemm's canal, were connected to each other by young fibroblasts invading from the surrounding connective tissue. Our observations indicate that the main pathway of aqueous humor across endothelium of the canal is converted from "intercellular" into "intracellular" (transported by vacuoles and pores) in these stages. In the postnatal monkeys, large vacuoles were observed in the dif f erentiatin.g endothelium at the inner wall of the canal. Our electron micrographs indicate that these vacuoles are formed by a successive fusion of adjacent pinocytotic vesicles in the endothelial cells and take an important role for aqueous humor transport.

Novel Characterization and Live Imaging of Schlemm's Canal Expressing Prox-1

Schlemm's canal is an important structure of the conventional aqueous humor outflow pathway and is critically involved in regulating the intraocular pressure. In this study, we report a novel finding that prospero homeobox protein 1 (Prox-1), the master control gene for lymphatic development, is expressed in Schlemm's canal. Moreover, we provide a novel in vivo method of visualizing Schlemm's c...

'What controls aqueous humour outflow resistance?'.

The bulk of aqueous humour outflow resistance is generated in or near the inner wall endothelium of Schlemm's canal in normal eyes, and probably also in glaucomatous eyes. Fluid flow through this region is controlled by the location of the giant vacuoles and pores found in cells of the endothelium of Schlemm's canal, but the flow resistance itself is more likely generated either in the extracel...

Pressure-dependent changes in nuclei and the process origins of the endothelial cells lining Schlemm's canal.

Monkeys eyes were fixed with glutaraldehyde in vivo at positive intraocular pressure of 35 or 25 mm Hg and compared with eyes fixed without a positive pressure gradient, with the use of light microscopy and transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The entire endothelial lining of the inner wall of Schlemm's canal ballooned or distended toward the external wall of the canal at positive int...

A Closer Look at Schlemm’s Canal Cell Physiology: Implications for Biomimetics

Among ocular pathologies, glaucoma is the second leading cause of progressive vision loss, expected to affect 80 million people worldwide by 2020. A primary cause of glaucoma appears to be damage to the conventional outflow tract. Conventional outflow tissues, a composite of the trabecular meshwork and the Schlemm's canal, regulate and maintain homeostatic responses to intraocular pressure. In ...

Schlemm's Canal Is a Unique Vessel with a Combination of Blood Vascular and Lymphatic Phenotypes that Forms by a Novel Developmental Process

Schlemm's canal (SC) plays central roles in ocular physiology. These roles depend on the molecular phenotypes of SC endothelial cells (SECs). Both the specific phenotype of SECs and development of SC remain poorly defined. To allow a modern and extensive analysis of SC and its origins, we developed a new whole-mount procedure to visualize its development in the context of surrounding tissues. W...
