Sweeping and Straining Effects in Sound Generation by High Reynolds Number Isotropic Turbulence

نویسنده

چکیده

The sound radiated by isotropic turbulence is computed using inertial range scaling expressions for the relevant two time and two point correlations. The result depends on whether the decay of Eulerian time correlations is dominated by large scale sweeping or by local straining: the straining hypothesis leads to an expression for total acoustic power given originally by Proudman, whereas the sweeping hypothesis leads to a more recent result due to Lilley. * This research was supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under NASA Contract No. NAS1-19480 while the authors were in residence at the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE), NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA 23681-0001. i

Simulation of Low Reynolds Number Isotropic Turbulence Including the Passive Scalar

Full simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence containing a homogeneous passive scalar were made at low Reynolds numbers and various Prandtl numbers. The results show that the spectral behavior of the two fields are quite similar; both fields decay as power-law functions of time. However. the decay exponent is quite dependent on both the Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The decay exponent of...

On space and time correlations of isotropic and rotating turbulence

Two different approaches are used for evaluating two-time correlations of Fourier velocity modes in isotropic, and in rotating, homogeneous incompressible turbulence. A synthetic model is proposed and compared with the results of direct numerical simulations. This kinematic model presents the advantage to incorporate different sources of unsteadiness, from arbitrary timescales to linear dynamic...

On the strength of the nonlinearity in isotropic turbulence

Turbulence governed by the Navier-Stokes equations shows a tendency to evolve towards a state in which the nonlinearity is diminished. In fully developed turbulence this tendency can be measured by comparing the variance of the nonlinear term to the variance of the same quantity measured in a Gaussian field with the same energy distribution. In order to study this phenomenon at high Reynolds nu...

Characterization of Sound Radiation by Unresolved Scales of Motion in Computational Aeroacoustics

Evaluation of the sound sources in a high Reynolds number turbulent ow requires timeaccurate resolution of an extremely large number of scales of motion. Direct numerical simulations will therefore remain infeasible for the forseeable future; although current large eddy simulation methods can resolve the largest scales of motion accurately, they must leave some scales of motion unresolved. A pr...
