Two-Dimensional Ferroelectrics

چکیده
The investigation of the finite-size effect in ferroelectric crystals and films has been limited by the experimental conditions. The smallest demonstrated ferroelectric crystals had a diameter of 200 A and the thinnest ferroelectric films were 200 A thick, macroscopic sizes on an atomic scale. Langmuir ± Blodgett deposition of films one monolayer at a time has produced high quality ferroelectric films as thin as 10 A, made from polyvinylidene fluoride and its copolymers. These ultrathin films permitted the ultimate investigation of finite-size effects on the atomic thickness scale. Langmuir ± Blodgett films also revealed the fundamental two-dimensional character of ferroelectricity in these materials by demonstrating that there is no so-called critical thickness; films as thin as two monolayers (1 nm) are ferroelectric, with a transition temperature near that of the bulk material. The films exhibit all the main properties of ferroelectricity with a first-order ferroelectric ± paraelectric phase transition: polarization hysteresis (switching); the jump in spontaneous polarization at the phase transition temperature; thermal hysteresis in the polarization; the increase in the transition temperature with applied field; double hysteresis above the phase transition temperature; and the existence of the ferroelectric critical point. The films also exhibit a new phase transition associated with the twodimensional layers.

ABC Ferroelectrics as Novel Materials for Phononic Crystals
In the present work the acoustic band structure of a two-dimensional (2D) phononic crystal (PC) containing an semiconducting ferroelectrics ABC (A=Sb, Bi; B=S, Se, Te; C=I, Br, and Cl) were investigated theoretically and numerically by the plane-waveexpansion (PWE) method. متن کاملFerroelectrics under the Synchrotron Light: A Review
Currently, an intensive search for high-performance lead-free ferroelectric materials is taking place. ABO₃ perovskites (A = Ba, Bi, Ca, K and Na; B = Fe, Nb, Ti, and Zr) appear as promising candidates. Understanding the structure-function relationship is mandatory, and, in this field, the roles of long- and short-range crystal orders and interactions are decisive. In this review, recent advanc...
متن کاملFerroelectric switching in Bi4Ti3O12 nanorods.
We report the piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of individual one-dimensional objects made of Bi(4)Ti(3)O(12) (BiT). The nanorods and nanowires investigated in this study were fabricated by a two-step process: 1) preparation of reactive templates using hydrothermal-like synthesis and colloidal chemistry and 2) transformation of the reactive templates in Bi(4)Ti(3)O(12) by solid-state r...
متن کاملM ay 2 00 4 Polarization kinetics in ferroelectrics with regard to fluctuations
The kinetics of fluctuations and switching of polarization in ferroelectrics, described by the Landau–Ginzburg Hamiltonian, is considered, based on a multi–dimensional Fokker–Planck equation. It describes the time evolution of the probability distribution function over the polarization field configurations in presence of a time–dependent external field. The Fokker–Planck equation in the Fourier...
متن کاملVisualization of polar nanoregions in lead-free relaxors via piezoresponse force microscopy in torsional dual AC resonance tracking mode.
Polar nanoregions (PNRs) play a key role in the functionality of relaxor ferroelectrics; however, visualizing them in lead-free relaxor ferroelectrics with high lateral resolution is still challenging. Thus, we studied herein the local ferroelectric domain distribution of the lead-free bismuth-based (1 -x)(Bi1/2Na1/2TiO3-Bi1/2K1/2TiO3) -x(Bi1/2Mg1/2TiO3) piezoceramics which show a relaxor behav...
