Sub-syllabic Acoustic Modeling across Chinese Dialects
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents a series of experiments on sub-syllabic unit selection across the two Chinese dialects – Mandarin and Cantonese. Evaluations are based on syllable recognition using only acoustic information, and no lexical knowledge is incorporated. We use a variety of subsyllabic acoustic models, motivated by phonological and lingustic structures charactersitics of Chinese. Our results should provide a useful reference for work in largevocabulary Chinese speech recognition, as well as related tasks, e.g. spoken document retrieval.

Zooming-in on Oujiang Wu: tonal homogeneity and acoustic reconstruction in a small sub-group of Chinese dialects
Acoustic descriptions of citation tones are presented for speakers from seven sites in the Oujiang sub-group of the Wu dialects of east central China. The homogeneity of two tones within the Oujiang sub-group is demonstrated by quantified comparison with Shanghai tones, and it is pointed out that the normalised tonal acoustics can be interpreted historically as reconstructions of proto-Oujiang ...
متن کاملA feature-based semivowel recognition system
A recognition system based on linguistic features was developed for the semivowels/w j r 1/ in American English. The features of interest are sonorant, syllabic, onsonantal, high, back, front, and retroflex. Acoustic correlates and events related to these features were used to detect and classify the semivowels. The recognizer was tested across semivowels occurring in a wide range of phonetic e...
متن کاملMultidialectal Acoustic Modeling: a Comparative Study
In this paper, multidialectal acoustic modeling based on sharing data across dialects is addressed. A comparative study of different methods of combining data based on decision tree clustering algorithms is presented. Approaches evolved differ in the way of evaluating the similarity of sounds between dialects, and the decision tree structure applied. Proposed systems are tested with Spanish dia...
متن کاملSub-syllable Acoustic Modeling for Cantonese Speech Recognition
This paper presents a pioneer study on acoustic modeling for continuous Cantonese speech recognition. It starts from the context-independent modeling of sub-syllabic units, namely INITIALs and FINALs, and then moves on to examine a number of context-dependent models that characterize intra-syllable co-articulation. The acoustic models are trained with a large database of Cantonese polysyllabic ...
متن کاملSyllable structure in spoken Arabic: a comparative investigation
The aim of this study is to demonstrate that rhythm variation across Arabic dialects is to a great extent correlated with the different types of syllabic structure observed in these dialects, especially with regard to the relative complexity of onsets and codas. The main focus is on the relationship between syllabic structures on the one hand, and rhythm classes based on segmental duration on t...
