Faster Betweenness Centrality Updates in Evolving Networks

چکیده
Finding central nodes is a fundamental problem in network analysis. Betweenness centrality is a well-known measure which quantifies the importance of a node based on the fraction of shortest paths going though it. Due to the dynamic nature of many today’s networks, algorithms that quickly update centrality scores have become a necessity. For betweenness, several dynamic algorithms have been proposed over the years, targeting different update types (incrementaland decremental-only, fully-dynamic). In this paper we introduce a new dynamic algorithm for updating betweenness centrality after an edge insertion or an edge weight decrease. Our method is a combination of two independent contributions: a faster algorithm for updating pairwise distances as well as number of shortest paths, and a faster algorithm for updating dependencies. Whereas the worst-case running time of our algorithm is the same as recomputation, our techniques considerably reduce the number of operations performed by existing dynamic betweenness algorithms. Our experimental evaluation on a variety of real-world networks reveals that our approach is significantly faster than the current state-of-the-art dynamic algorithms, approximately by one order of magnitude on average. 1998 ACM Subject Classification G.2.2 Graph Theory

Approximating Betweenness Centrality in Large Evolving Networks
Betweenness centrality ranks the importance of nodes by their participation in all shortest paths of the network. Therefore computing exact betweenness values is impractical in large networks. For static networks, approximation based on randomly sampled paths has been shown to be significantly faster in practice. However, for dynamic networks, no approximation algorithm for betweenness centrali...
متن کاملFully Dynamic Betweenness Centrality Maintenance on Massive Networks
Measuring the relative importance of each vertex in a network is one of the most fundamental building blocks in network analysis. Among several importance measures, betweenness centrality, in particular, plays key roles in many real applications. Considerable effort has been made for developing algorithms for static settings. However, real networks today are highly dynamic and are evolving rapi...
متن کاملA Fast Approach to the Detection of All-Purpose Hubs in Complex Networks with Chemical Applications
A novel algorithm for the fast detection of hubs in chemical networks is presented. The algorithm identifies a set of nodes in the network as most significant, aimed to be the most effective points of distribution for fast, widespread coverage throughout the system. We show that our hubs have in general greater closeness centrality and betweenness centrality than vertices with maximal degree, w...
متن کاملLocal Betweenness for Finding Communities in Networks
ABSTRACT The betweenness centrality measure has been widely used for detecting community structure in networks, in particular in the “GN” algorithm due to Girvan and Newman. This suffers from low speed because the betweenness measure is computed from the entire network, and it has been largely supplanted by faster algorithms that can detect community structure using more local methods in place ...
متن کاملGroup Centrality Maximization via Network Design
Network centrality plays an important role in many applications. Central nodes in social networks can be influential, driving opinions and spreading news or rumors. In hyperlinked environments, such as the Web, where users navigate via clicks, central content receives high traffic, becoming target for advertising campaigns. While there is an extensive amount of work on centrality measures and t...
