eral kinetic systems and compares their properties (after cautioning the reader of the possible pitfalls and of the assumptions which must be made) with various biological phenomena such as regulation, regeneration, determination , gene action, pleiotropism, etc. Few biologists have been as successful as Waddington in accomplishing a synthesis between embryology and genetics. In this volume, he brings his wide knowledge of these two fields into the framework of modern evolutionary thought in a concerted attempt to develop a theory of evolution which takes advantage of the concepts of developmental genetics as well as those of modern population genetics. and The Survival of the Adaptable is sufficient to indicate that some of the thorniest problems in modern evolutionary thought have been approached. (One of the essays, The Cybernetics of Development, is concerned largely with embryological problems, especially the canalization of development.) Waddington has been scrupulously careful to define terms and concepts as he uses them, and one of the great merits of the book is that it avoids much of the muddled thinking and careless use of terminology so common in present-day literature. He examines the contributions to modern evolutionary theory which have been made by the mathematical approach and concludes that, in spite of much enthusiasm for the method and the rather awestruck attitude toward it of nonmathematical biologists, it has contributed very little to evolutionary thought at the theoretical level. He makes this point repeatedly ". .. in order to overcome the anaesthetic effect exerted on biologists by algebra which is incomprehensible to them. There is no need for evolutionary theory to limit its view to those topics which have been successfully formulated in mathematical terms.. .. It is, perhaps, only if the biologist continues to do his best to cope with [mathematically difficult concepts]. .. with the imprecise but subtle tools of ordinary language that the mathematicians will eventually be driven to dissect them with their penetrating but relatively inflexible scalpels." Professor Waddington writes with his characteristic lucidity and elegance , which is marred only rarely by a passage of 'purple' prose (see p. 88). There are many controversial points in the essays, for Wadding-ton is an avowed neo-Lamarckian and tends away from the extreme atomism which is characteristic of much modern scientific thought. He has also dared to attack some sacred cows. Not every biologist will agree with all of Waddington's conclusions, but most will find …

An action of 5-hydroxytryptamine on adrenaline receptors.
Contractions of isolated strips of cat spleen due to 5-hydroxytryptamine, adrenaline, histamine and acetylcholine were antagonized by phenoxybenzamine. Responses to both 5-hydroxytryptamine and adrenaline were not blocked in strips which were protected by a high concentration of either 5-hydroxytryptamine or adrenaline throughout exposure to phenoxybenzamine. The contraction due to a large dose...
متن کاملCoupling between platelet 5-hydroxytryptamine and potassium transport.
Platelet plasma membrane vesicles accumulate 5-hydroxytryptamine in response to a gradient of NaCl (out > in). Although potassium ion is not required for this process, a K’ concentration gradient (in > out) elevates the steady state level of 5-hydroxytryptamine accumulation 5-fold. Transport is independent of the generation of an electrical potential (interior negative) across the vesicle membr...
متن کاملConcentration-dependent stimulation of intestinal phase III of migrating motor complex by circulating serotonin in humans.
1. The influence of circulating 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) on small intestinal motility was investigated in healthy volunteers. 2. Small intestinal motility was studied by means of a constantly perfused multi-channel manometry tube, connected to a computer system. 3. Intravenous infusions of either 5-hydroxytryptamine at increasing doses or saline were given over a period of 4 h. 4. 5-Hydr...
متن کاملSynthesis and the Inactivation of Calcium Entry after Prolonged Exposure of the Blowfly Salivary Gland to 5-Hydroxytryptamine By MICHAEL
The incorporation of [32p]p; into all salivary-gland phospholipids except phosphatidic acid was inhibited by 5-hydroxytryptamine. The accumulation of [32p]p1 into phosphatidic acid was actually enhanced by 5-hydroxytryptamine. There was an inhibition of labelled inositol incorporation into phosphatidylinositol by 5-hydroxytryptamine, which seems to be mediated by calcium because it was mimicked...
متن کاملRelationship between neonatal testosterone and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5 HT) in controlling the pattern of LH release in adult rats
Relationship between neonatal testosterone and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in controlling the pattern of LH release in adult rats was investigated in this study. Hypothalamic 5-HT concentrations are transiently lower in male as compared to female Wistar rats in the second week post-partum (pp). It has also been shown that pharmacologically potentiating 5-HT activity during this period feminizes ...
متن کاملMechanism of imipramine inhibition of platelet 5-hydroxytryptamine transport.
Plasma membrane vesicles isolated from porcine blood platelets take up approximately 8 to 15 pmol of [3H]imipramine per mg of membrane protein. This apparent binding requires Na+ in the external medium and is reversed by 5-hydroxytryptamine and fluoxetine. The apparent KD for imipramine uptake is 23 nM, which agrees well with the KI for competitive inhibition of 5-hydroxytryptamine transport by...
