چکیده

Boundary layers driven by surface buoyant forcings are commonly observed in the environmental flows. An atmospheric example of such boundary layer is the so-called convective boundary layer (CBL), which is driven by buoyancy production at the heated underlying surface during the daytime conditions. The buoyancy is defined as b= g − ( ρ -ρ0 )/ρ0 , where ρ is the density of the fluid, ρ0 is the reference density, and g is the acceleration due to gravity. In atmospheric terms, the buoyancy can be approximately expressed as b=g( v θ 0 v θ )/ 0 v θ , where v θ is the virtual potential temperature.

Large Eddy Simulation of Convective Entrainment in Linearly and Discretely Stratified Fluids

Regimes of convective entrainment in linearly and discretely stratified fluids are investigated by means of a high-resolution LES in conjunction with relevant data from atmospheric, laboratory, numerical, and analytical studies of penetrative convection. Relationships between parameters of entrainment in the discretely stratified fluid are shown to be rather different to their counterparts in t...

Dynamics of Convective Entrainment in a Heterogeneously Stratified Atmosphere with Wind Shear

Shear and buoyancy are both known to contribute to the development of boundary layers, whose characteristics include turbulent mixing of scalar quantities within the layer. Purely shear-driven boundary layers include airflow over an airplane wing and stream flow over a bottom surface. Buoyancy-driven boundary layers include the atmospheric convective boundary layer (CBL) and the upper levels of...

URBAN FLUID DYNAMICS - Thermally driven environmental flows Entrainment into the atmospheric boundary layer: lidar observations and LES simulations

Entrainment is the process whereby miscible fluid is exchanged across a density interface bounding a region of turbulent flow [17]. It is of central importance in governing the dynamics of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) top. In the exchange process, relatively quiescent fluid is engulfed by turbulent motions penetrating across the interface and is subsequently mixed into the turbulent reg...

Dynamics of Sheared Convective Boundary Layer Entrainment. Part I: Methodological Background and Large-Eddy Simulations

The reported study examines the dynamics of entrainment and its effects on the evolution of the dry atmospheric convective boundary layer (CBL) when wind shear is present. The sheared CBL can be studied by means of direct measurements in the atmosphere, laboratory studies, and numerical techniques. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are discussed in the present paper, which also...

Casson Fluid Flow with Variable Viscosity and Thermal Conductivity along Exponentially Stretching Sheet Embedded in a Thermally Stratified Medium with Exponentially Heat Generation

The motion of temperature dependent viscosity and thermal conductivity of steady incompressible laminar free convective (MHD) non-Newtonian Casson fluid flow over an exponentially stretching surface embedded in a thermally stratified medium are investigated. It is assumed that natural convection is induced by buoyancy and exponentially decaying internal heat generation across the space. The dim...
