Cancer and Aging: Why Bother about Light at Night?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Shift work which causes circadian disruption is an established cancer risk factor. A large body of experimental and epidemiological data proves that exposure to light at night promotes carcinogenesis in various tissues and accelerates aging [1-3]. Artificial or natural light through master clock located in suprachiasmatic nuclei of hypothalamus suppresses night peak of melatonin synthesis in the pineal gland. Melatonin is known to exert antioxidant, antigonadotropic, immunostimulating and anticancer effects [4-6]. Except direct antioxidant action through free radicals scavenging melatonin works as a chronobiotic which tunes cellular clock. Exact molecular pathway by which melatonin regulates cellular clock is still not established. Melatonin is a ligand for two membrane-bound Gprotein coupled receptors, MT1 and MT2 [7]; in nucleus it interacts with members of retinoid-related orphan nuclear receptor family (RORalpha/RZRalpha) [8]. One of the latter, RORa, is a part of cellular clock machinery.

Women with hereditary breast cancer predispositions should avoid using their smartphones, tablets and laptops at night
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women, both in the developed and developing countries. Women with mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancers. Recent studies show that short-wavelength visible light disturb the secretion of melatonin and causes circadian rhythm disruption. We have previously studied the health effects of exposure...
متن کاملCan Light Emitted from Smartphone Screens and Taking Selfies Cause Premature Aging and Wrinkles?
Since the early days of human life on the Earth, our skin has been exposed to different levels of light. Recently, due to inevitable consequences of modern life, humans are not exposed to adequate levels of natural light during the day but they are overexposed to relatively high levels of artificial light at night. Skin is a major target of oxidative stress and the link between aging and oxidat...
متن کاملWhy HID headlights bother older drivers.
Driving requires effective coordination of visual, motor, and cognitive skills. Visual skills are pushed to their limit at night by decreased illumination and by disabling glare from oncoming headlights. High intensity discharge (HID) headlamps project light farther down roads, improving their owner's driving safety by increasing the time available for reaction to potential problems. Glare is p...

Japan has been aging faster than other industrialized nations, and its experience offers useful lessons to others. Japan has been willing to expand its welfare state with a long-term care (LTC) insurance to finance home care and nursing home care for frail elderly. As Ikegami shows, it created new facilities and expanded specialized staffing for home care, developed a c...
متن کاملThe effect of Bright light on Fatigue and sleepiness in night shift work nurses
Objective: In this study we assessed the effect of bright light emitted by light box on fatigue, and sleepiness in nurses. Methods: 44 healthy female shift work nurses were allocated into two groups of intervention and control. In the first stage, bright light was emitted to the nurses in the intervention group by the light box, and bright light was not emitted to the control group. In the nex...
