New oceanic proxies for paleoclimate

چکیده

Environmental variables such as temperature and salinity cannot be directly measured for the past. Such variables do, however, influence the chemistry and biology of the marine sedimentary record in a measurable way. Reconstructing the past environment is therefore possible by ‘proxy’. Such proxy reconstruction uses chemical and biological observations to assess two aspects of Earth’s climate system ^ the physics of ocean^atmosphere circulation, and the chemistry of the carbon cycle. Early proxies made use of faunal assemblages, stable isotope fractionation of oxygen and carbon, and the degree of saturation of biogenically produced organic molecules. These well-established tools have been complemented by many new proxies. For reconstruction of the physical environment, these include proxies for ocean temperature (Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, N44Ca) and ocean circulation (Cd/Ca, radiogenic isotopes, 14C, sortable silt). For reconstruction of the carbon cycle, they include proxies for ocean productivity (231Pa/230Th, U concentration); nutrient utilization (Cd/Ca, N15N, N30Si); alkalinity (Ba/Ca); pH (N11B); carbonate ion concentration (foraminiferal weight, Zn/Ca); and atmospheric CO2 (N11B, N13C). These proxies provide a better understanding of past climate, and allow climate^model sensitivity to be tested, thereby improving our ability to predict future climate change. Proxy research still faces challenges, however, as some environmental variables cannot be reconstructed and as the underlying chemistry and biology of most proxies is not well understood. Few proxies have been applied to prePleistocene times ^ another challenge for future research. Only by solving such challenges will proxies provide a full understanding of the range of possible climate variability on Earth and of the mechanisms causing this variability. : 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

A Methodology for Robust Multiproxy Paleoclimate Reconstructions and Modeling of Temperature Conditional Quantiles.

Great strides have been made in the field of reconstructing past temperatures based on models relating temperature to temperature-sensitive paleoclimate proxies. One of the goals of such reconstructions is to assess if current climate is anomalous in a millennial context. These regression based approaches model the conditional mean of the temperature distribution as a function of paleoclimate p...

Geometric morphometrics of vole (Microtus californicus) dentition as a new paleoclimate proxy: Shape change along geographic and climatic clines

Quaternary small-mammal fossils are widespread and have served as valuable paleoclimatic proxies through niche-modeling or otherwise relating presence-absence data to climatic data. This paper examines the potential for a new, more resolved type of paleoclimate proxy in the form of Microtus tooth shape, using an abundant California species, Microtus californicus. Geometric morphometrics and par...

Proxy inconsistency and other problems in millennial paleoclimate reconstructions.

Mann et al. (1) present two paleoclimate reconstruction methods [‘‘error-in-variables’’ (EIV) and ‘‘composite plus scale’’ (CPS)], claiming statistically significant skill for both. Their figure 3 reveals that from approximately 750 to 1100, the CPS 95% confidence interval excludes the EIV 95% confidence interval and vice versa. This is evidence not of skill, but of inconsistency. Contrary to a...

Calcium Nodules as a Proxy for Quaternary Paleoclimate Change on China’s Loess Plateau

Different proxies have been used to investigate Quaternary paleoclimate change. Here, we used weathering of calcium nodules in paleosols on China's Loess Plateau as a proxy for Quaternary paleoclimate changes to provide an alternative indicator of these changes. Paleosol and carbonate nodules were collected from Luochuan and Lantian counties in Shaanxi Province, China. We found that this approa...
