Ranging Performance Evaluation of a Laser Scanner

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Large volume laser scanners are used for a variety of purposes, including dimensional metrology of large artifacts, digitization and reverse engineering, as well as historical preservation and archiving. These devices exploit the propagative properties of structured light (in this case, lased light) to collect spatial information of objects in the field of view. Laser scanners employ rotational parts to scan the laser light in multiple directions. The propagation of the laser, together with the rotational indexing allows laser scanners to register the data in spherical coordinates – range (R), azimuth angle (Φ), and zenith angle (θ). In this study, we are primarily concerned with evaluating the ability of these systems to accurately measure range.

متن کاملA novel method for locating the local terrestrial laser scans in a global aerial point cloud
In addition to the heterogeneity of aerial and terrestrial views, the small scale terrestrial point clouds are hardly comparable with large scale and overhead aerial point clouds. A hierarchical method is proposed for automatic locating of terrestrial scans in aerial point cloud. The proposed method begins with detecting the candidate positions for the deployment of the terrestrial laser scanne...

In this paper, we show that a 3D laser scanner tracking system can be efficiently used in a projective mode similar to photogrammetry-based methods. The best of both laser ranging and photogrammetry can be combined to incr...
متن کاملLaser Scanning and Its Potential to Support 3d Panoramic Recording
Today very fast terrestrial laser scanners are available which can be very well combined with panoramic cameras to make 3Dpanoramic recording possible. Due to the very precise depth information of the laser scanner and the high resolved color information provided by the CCD sensor of the panoramic camera 3D-panoramic images of high quality can be obtained. In order to assess the performance of ...
متن کاملTesting and Performance Evaluation of Fixed Terrestrial 3D Laser Scanning Systems for Highway Applications
In many 3D laser scanner applications, high relative precision (relative dimensions within the registered point cloud) is sufficient; in contrast, DOT applications require good relative precision and high absolute accuracy. Thus, precise and robust geo-referencing is critical, and robust workflows are needed to reduce the likelihood and impact of human errors. DOT applications have a fairly uni...
