PURPOSE: Ah the population of puticnts undergoing current rcfractivc procedures increases, il is now important for rliniciaos of all beckgmunds to know the various FDA and DHSS approved topical prcpantions which are roudnely used in the managemeot of tyes after Radial Kcretotomy (RK) sod IIxc:imer laser photorefractive kcratectomy (PRK). METIIODS: This paper prcsentn details of the various effects and side-effects of aI1 current mpical ophthalmic prepwarions used in postoperative cart of RK and PRK/PARK/PTK patients. RExULTS:DC~~M effects of these drugs on I) Regression or amtmpia; 2) Cometi thickness variation; 3) Changes it, comeal sensitivity and wound healing will bc discussed. ~“N(XLfSION; Tht role of steroids and Non-steroidal antiinflunmtttoty agtnts in post-operetive retractive aw viwd r.:r.~~tl:, cumuli be over cmpbasixd.

Corneal Regeneration After Photorefractive Keratectomy: A Review.
Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) remodels corneal stroma to compensate refractive errors. The removal of epithelium and the ablation of stroma provoke the disruption of corneal nerves and a release of several peptides from tears, epithelium, stroma and nerves. A myriad of cytokines, growth factors, and matrix metalloproteases participate in the process of corneal wound healing. Their balance w...
متن کاملEffect of leukocytes on corneal cellular proliferation and wound healing.
PURPOSE To establish whether fucoidin, by blocking the adhesion of leukocytes on the limbal vascular endothelium, prevents extravasation of the cells from the blood stream into the limbal stroma and the wounded area after corneal injury. Successful leukocyte blocking enabled investigation of the influence of leukocytes on corneal cellular proliferation after corneal wounding. METHODS Thirty-t...
متن کاملPhotorefractive keratectomy: implications of corneal wound healing
Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) with an argon fluoride laser (193 nm) was developed to alter the refractive power of the eye predictably and permanently. At PRK the central corneal epithelium is debrided mechanically and a disc 4 to 6 mm in diameter is ablated into the anterior stroma using computer controlled algorithms to control the depth of the wound. Theoretically for corrections of up t...
متن کاملKeratocyte apoptosis after corneal surgery.
PURPOSE Programmed cell death (apoptosis) is the controlled death of cells that occurs with minimal collateral damage to surrounding cells or tissue during development, homeostasis, and wound healing. The authors hypothesize the keratocyte apoptosis is an initiating factor in the wound-healing response after refractive surgical procedures. To evaluate the effects of different corneal manipulati...
متن کاملTransepithelial PTK/PRK over complicated LASIK flaps.
To the Editor: We read with interest the recent contribution by Dr. William Bond (Bond WI. PRK over incomplete LASIK flap [letter]. J Refract Surg 2000;16:483). We are convinced that some variant of the technique he described, which we think is probably more appropriately referred to as transepithelial PTK/PRK, will eventually become the procedure of choice for the treatment of some patients wh...
