Diffusional Contributions and Electrostatic Exclusion Effects on Transport through Ultrafiltration Membranes

چکیده

1. Introduction Ultrafiltration is used for protein concentration and buffer exchange in the downstream processing of essentially all recombinant protein products [1]. Although ultrafiltration has traditionally been viewed as a convective pressure-driven process, with the separation determined on the basis of size, solute transport through ultrafiltration membranes is also strongly influenced by solute diffusion and electrostatic interactions [2, 3]. Electrostatic interactions can be exploited for high-resolution protein separations, taking advantage of the unique surface charge characteristics of individual proteins. Diffusional transport in ultrafiltration not only influences the separation characteristics, it also provides a directional dependence to solute transport through typical asymmetric ultrafiltration membranes [4].

Effect of Asymmetric Functionalized Graphene Oxide (Janus GO) on Young′s Modulus and Glass Transition Temperature of PSf Ultrafiltration Membrane

In this study, effect of asymmetric functionalized graphene oxide (Janus GO) on Young′s modulus and glass transition temperature of Polysulfone (PSf) ultrafiltration membranes was investigated. The membranes were prepared via phase inversion method and GO nanosheets were dispersed in casting solution by sonication. Results showed that the Normalized Young’s modulus (on the basis of neat ...

Two-fluid model for the simultaneous flow of colloids and fluids in porous media.

To describe the velocities of particles such as ions, protein molecules and colloids dispersed or dissolved in a fluid, it is important to also describe the forces acting on the fluid, including pressure gradients and friction of the fluid with the particles and with the porous media through which the fluid flows. To account for this problem, the use of a two-fluid model is described, familiar ...

NOM Rejection by, and Fouling of, NF and UF Membranes

OBJECTIVES: The performance of spiral-wound nanofiltration (NF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes was investigated in terms of natural organic matter (NOM) rejection and associated NOM fouling. The study objectives focused on • demonstrating the effects of both hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions between NOM components and the membrane surface • determining influential factors (water qu...

The Ultrafiltration Performance of Cellulose Acetate Asymmetric Membranes: A New Perspective on the Correlation with the Infrared Spectra

Integral asymmetric cellulose acetate (CA) membranes were casted by phase-inversion with formamide varying content - 22, 30 and 34% - as pore promoter. These membranes, CA-22, CA-30 and CA-34, were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflection mode (ATR-FTIR) to investigate the porous membrane matrix influence on the polymer/water/solute interactions and the selective ultrafi...

Diffusion through Porous Media: Ultrafiltration, Membrane Permeation and Molecular Sieving

This paper considers permeation through microporous or nanoporous inorganic membranes under the influence of an applied pressure gradient. In general membrane permeation may be considered as a diffusive process, driven by the gradient of chemical potential (which depends on both composition and pressure). The relative importance of these two factors varies greatly for different types of system....
