چکیده

To incorporate uncertainties in empty container repositioning problem, we formulate a two-stage stochastic programming model with random demand, supply, ship weight capacity and ship space capacity. The Sample Average Approximation (SAA) method is applied to approximate the expected value function. Several non-independent and identically distributed sampling schemes are considered to enhance the performance of the SAA method. Numerical experiments show that near-optimal solutions could be provided by the SAA method with these sampling schemes. Keywords-empty container repositioning; simulation optimization; sample average approximation; supersaturated design

An optimization model for management of empty containers in distribution network of a logistics company under uncertainty

In transportation via containers, unbalanced movement of loaded containers forces shipping companies to reposition empty containers. This study addresses the problem of empty container repositioning (ECR) in the distribution network of a European logistics company, where some restrictions impose decision making in an uncertain environment. The problem involves dispatching empty contain...

The container shipping network design problem with empty container repositioning

This paper addresses the design of container liner shipping service networks by explicitly taking into account empty container repositioning. Two key and interrelated issues, those of deploying ships and containers are usually treated separately by most existing studies on shipping network design. In this paper, both issues are considered simultaneously. The problem is formulated as a two-stage...

A Problem Review

Maritime shipping containers are important to a number of different industries as they facilitate the reduction of transportation costs. To address the needs of shippers, empty containers need to be repositioned globally between seaports. Since the cost of empty container repositioning (ECR) constitutes a significant element of the total cost of running a global container fleet operation, the p...

A Markov Decision Process Model for an Online Empty Container Repositioning Problem in a Two-port Fixed Route

In this paper, we propose a Markov Decision Process model for an empty repositioning problem in a two-port system. We consider two cases. The first case is the offline case, where demand information is assumed as a random variable with known distribution. The second case is online case where demand information is partially known. In both cases, we figure out the optimal controlling policies. T...

Incorporating Maritime Stakeholder Perspectives for Implementing an 'Inland-Depots-for-Empty-Containers' System Using an Analytic Hierarchy Process

Container movement involves several stakeholders where each group is focused on achieving its own objectives. By actively considering the perspective of different maritime stakeholders, this paper identifies a set of implementation strategies and prioritizes them to successfully implement an ‘Inland-Depots-for-Empty-Containers’ (IDEC) system in a region. It builds on the authors’ earlier work t...
