چکیده

Miniaturized species have evolved in many animal lineages, including insects and vertebrates. Consequently, their nervous systems are constrained to fit within tiny volumes. These miniaturized nervous systems face two major challenges for information processing: noise and energy consumption. Fewer or smaller neurons with fewer molecular components will increase noise, affecting information processing and transmission. Smaller, more densely-packed neural processes will increase the density of energy consumption whilst reducing the space available for mitochondria, which supply energy. Although miniaturized nervous systems benefit from smaller distances between neurons, thus saving time, space and energy, they have also increased the space available for neural processing by expanding and contorting their nervous systems to fill any available space, sometimes at the expense of other structures. Other adaptations, such as multifunctional neurons or matched filters, may further alleviate the pressures on space within miniaturized nervous systems. Despite these adaptations, we argue that limitations on information processing are likely to affect the behaviour generated by miniaturized nervous systems.

P176: Neurological Diseases: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

The nervous system is an extremely complex communication system that can send and receive large amounts of information simultaneously. The nervous system has two distinct parts: the central nervous system (the brain and the spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (the nerves located outside the brain and spinal cord). The main unit of the nervous system is neural cells (neurons). The rou...

Irisin protect the Dopaminergic neurons of the Substantia nigra in the rat model of Parkinson’s disease

Objective(s): Exercise ameliorates the quality of life and reduces the risk of neurological derangements such as Alzheimer’s (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). Irisin is a product of the physical activity and is a circulating hormone that regulates the energy metabolism in the body. In the nervous system, Irisin influences neurogenesis and neural differentiation in mic...

Design and Miniaturization of a Novel Fractal Microstrip Antenna for UWB Applications

A novel printed octagonal fractal microstrip antenna with semi-elliptical ground plane is presented for ultra wide band applications. The proposed antenna has a compact size of 20×20×1 mm³. The measured result of the antenna exhibits the ultra wide band characteristics from 2/9 to 14/2 GHz. In this paper, reducing antenna’s size by 35%, the same results were achieved, while small dimension frac...

Anatomy of adult Megaphragma (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), one of the smallest insects, and new insight into insect miniaturization

The body size, especially in cases of extreme reduction, is an important characteristic that strongly determines the morphology, physiology, and biology of animals. Miniaturization is a widespread trend in animal evolution and one of the principal directions of evolution in insects. Miniaturization-related features of insect morphology have been subject to intensive studies during the last few ...

Nerve Growth Factor and the Trans-differentiation of Human Dental Pulp Stem Cells Into Cholinergic-like Neurons

Introduction: Cell therapy has been widely considered as a therapeutic approach for neurodegenerative diseases and nervous system damage. Cholinergic neurons as one of the most important neurons that play a significant role in controlling emotions, mobility, and autonomic systems. In this study, human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) were differentiated into the cholinergic neurons by β-mercapto...
