چکیده

It is our pleasure to provide this EMCREG International newsletter which discusses lactate as a marker in resuscitation for sepsis and trauma. While lactate testing has been in medical arena for over a century, its utility in the emergency department for the evaluation of these potentially critically ill patients is only now being recognized. This newsletter aims to review the present literature on lactate testing in the clinical environment as it pertains to its use for emergency department patients.

Lactate clearance as a useful biomarker for the prediction of all-cause mortality in critically ill patients: a systematic review study protocol

INTRODUCTION Arterial lactate is a reflection of balance between lactate production and clearance. Accumulating lactate may be a marker of global hypoxia or hypoperfusion. Lactate clearance is the reduction of lactate concentrations with interventional strategies, and it has been associated with increased risk of death in critically ill patients. However, conflicting results exist, which mandat...

The Physiology and the Clinical Significance of Postoperative Hyperlactatemia After Pediatric Cardiac Surgery

Lactate was first described by Berzelius in 1807 when he discovered it in its modified form in meat juices. It has been used as a marker of cellular hypoxia and tissue malperfusion, and hyperlactatemia has been associated with postoperative complications and mortality. Notably, high blood lactate concentrations have been associated with increased mortality and morbidity in children after cardia...

Procalcitonin as a Marker of Neonatal Sepsis in Intensive Care Units

Background: The appropriateness of using serum levels of procalcotonin (PCT) for early diagnosis of newborn sepsis is still controversial. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to compare the usefulness of PCT with those of serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell (WBC) counts in the diagnosis and response to treatment of neonatal sepsis. Methods: A total of 47 ...

Procalcitonin: A Reliable Marker for the Diagnosis of Neonatal Sepsis

Objective(s) In the last few years, serum procalcitonin has been proposed as an early marker of infections in neonates, with varying results. In this study, we aimed to investigate the value of procalcitonin, and C- reactive protein in establishing the diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. Materials and Methods Blood samples were collected at admission from 69 neonates with suspected infection (admi...

Blood Lactate Is a Useful Indicator for the Medical Emergency Team.

Lactate has been thoroughly studied and found useful for stratification of patients with sepsis, in the Intensive Care Unit, and trauma care. However, little is known about lactate as a risk-stratification marker in the Medical Emergency Team- (MET-) call setting. We aimed to determine whether the arterial blood lactate level at the time of a MET-call is associated with increased 30-day mortali...
