چکیده

The median artery is the main source of blood for the forearm in intrauterine life. During the process of development the median artery gets obliterated and supplies the median nerve. Variation of persistent median artery and its accompanying with the median nerve in the carpal tunnel is one of the important anatomic variations of the upper limb. Thrombosis of the artery inside the carpal tunnel may cause carpal tunnel syndrome. The present variation of persistent median artery inside the carpal tunnel was observed in a 28 year old female during magnetic resonance imaging of the wrist. The artery is originated from the ulnar artery and passes through the forearm accompanying the median nerve and then enters the carpal tunnel. The diameter of artery inside the carpal tunnel was 2 mm. Median artery thrombosis in this kind of variation can cause compression on the median nerve and symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Doppler ultrasound is recommended to be used to diagnose vascular thrombosis in the carpal tunnel.

Persistent median artery in the carpal tunnel: anatomy, embryology, clinical significance, and review of the literature.

The median artery usually regresses after the eighth week of intrauterine life, but in some cases it persists into adulthood. The persistent median artery (PMA) passes through the carpal tunnel of the wrist, accompanying the median nerve. During anatomical dissection in our department, we found two unilateral cases of PMA originating from the ulnar artery. In both cases the PMA passed through t...

Aberrant Radial Artery Causing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Anatomical vascular variations are rare causes of carpal tunnel syndrome. An aberrant medial artery is the most common vascular variation, while an aberrant radial artery causing carpal tunnel syndrome is even more rare, with an incidence ranging less than 3%. This article reports a patient with compression of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel by an aberrant superficial branch of the radi...

Bifid median nerve causing carpal tunnel syndrome: MRI and surgical correlation.

Carpal tunnel syndrome can be secondary in some patients, and vascular anomalies (usually a persistent median artery), median nerve variations, or both are among the etiologic factors. High division of the median nerve proximal to the carpal tunnel (known as a bifid median nerve) is a median nerve anomaly that has an incidence rate of 2.8%. This rare entity is often associated with various abno...

Evaluation and Comparison of Changes in Ultrasonography before and after Carpal Tunnel release

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between changes observed in an ultrasonography before and after the surgical release of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Methods: This prospective study was performed on 15 candidates of CTS surgery during 2017-2018 who underwent an ultrasonography before and three months after the surgery. The structural changes in the median nerve and the...

The clinical significance of the palmaris longus tendon and functional superficial flexor of the little finger in the pathophysiology of carpal tunnel syndrome

Abstract   Background: The pathophysiology of carpal tunnel syndrome is associated with   increased intracarpal canal pressure. Recently, palmaris longus has been introduced   as an independent risk factor for the development of carpal tunnel syndrome. The   purpose of this study was to assess the association of carpal tunnel syndrome with   the presence of palmaris longus tendon and function...
