چکیده

Two experiments tested the use of lupin grain as a supplement for weaners grazing wheat stubble. The control groups in both trials received no supplement until liveweights dropped to 22 kg and then lupins were fed. In 1984 two lick-blocks were tested; the Rumevite "Sheep and Cattle" block and the ICI "Ultrapro 30" block. Liveweight changes of animals on the control (5 weeks), Rumevite block, ICI block (11 weeks) and lupin-fed (7 weeks) (200 q/head/d) treatments were -40, -18, -8 and 40 q/d respectively. In the second experiment (1985) lupins were fed in three different ways to provide 150 q/head/d. These were: trailed twice weekly: trailed weekly; and spread throughout the paddock every four weeks. Liveweight was maintained throughout the trial with all treatments of 150 q/head/d. (

Utilization of low quality resources by small ruminants in Mediterranean agro-pastoral systems: the case of browse and aftermath cereal stubble

Browse and cereal stubble represent the two most important resources for grazing small ruminants in dry Mediterranean areas. The purpose of the present review is to provide updated information regarding their nutritional value. In a mixed Mediterranean environment, browse represents at least 40% of goat’s diet. Most browse species in the Mediterranean are rich in tanniferous phenolic substances...

The Effect of Limestone Added to Oat Grain on the Growth of Young Sheep Grazing Wheat Stubble

Fifty Merino weaner sheep grazing on a wheat stubble at Wongan Hills were fed ad lib. either oat grain mixed with limestone (2% w/w) or just oat grain during the summer and autumn of 1985. The addition of limestone to the oat supplement increased the growth of the sheep from 39 g/day to 83 g/day (P<O.OOl) during the first 70 days of feeding. A summer thunderstorm resulted in a brief germination...

Effects of supplementary feeding on growth and carcass characteristics of fat-tailed lambs grazing cereal stubble

Despite a shortage of animal feed in Iran, cereal stubble is often underutilized due to agro-economic reasons. On the other hand, lambs fed with a conventional fattening ration deposit a considerable amount of fat; therefore, this experiment was conducted aimed at better utilization of cereal stubble and reducing the fat content of lamb carcasses. Fat-tailed Mehraban and Ghezel ram lambs were p...

Evaluation of a remote drafting system for regulating sheep access to supplement

Remote drafting technology now available for sheep makes possible targeted supplementation of individuals within a grazing flock. This system was evaluated by using 68 Merino wethers grazing dry-season, native Mitchell grass pasture (predominantly Astrebla spp.) as a group and receiving access to lupin grain through a remote drafter 0, 1, 2, 4 or 7 days/week for 8 weeks. The sole paddock wateri...

The potential role of sheep in dryland grain production systems

In dryland farming areas of Montana, annual precipitation is not sufficient for annual planting of cereal grains. Instead, a crop-summer fallow farming system is used to conserve soil moisture and increase available nitrogen for subsequent crop growth. Managing this summer fallow, either by mechanical means or with herbicides, is the highest variable cost associated with dryland grain productio...
