چکیده

Sir, In a recent technical note, Zanen et al. reported poor agreement between different Doppler flow measurements in dialysis shunts, such as conventional Doppler (CD), quantitative colour velocity index (CVI-Q) and ultrasound dilution (DU) w1x. In particular, results of CD measurements did not correlate with those obtained with CVI-Q and DU, respectively. We share the experience of the investigators that values of measured blood flow vary between different commercial Doppler ultrasound systems. We found that flow measurements differ between machines and even between different ultrasound probes with the same machine w2x. Therefore absolute values of measured blood flow volume should be interpreted with caution. Blood flow (Qb) (flow volumeumin) is calculated by the cross sectional area of the vessel (A) and the time average velocity (TAV) according to the formula:

Preliminary comparative study of small amplitude helical and conventional ePTFE arteriovenous shunts in pigs.

Intimal hyperplasia (IH), which causes occlusion of arterial bypass grafts and arteriovenous (A-V) shunts, develops preferentially in low wall shear, or stagnation, regions. Arterial geometry is commonly three-dimensional, generating swirling flows, the characteristics of which include in-plane mixing and inhibition of stagnation. Clinical arterial bypass grafts are commonly two-dimensional, fa...

Within-session and between-session variability of haemodialysis shunt flow measurements.

BACKGROUND Knowledge of the variability of a measurement method is essential for its clinical application. We investigated the variability of shunt flow measurements, since this is a relatively neglected area in the literature. In particular, no direct comparison of between-session and within-session variability was available until now. METHODS During two consecutive dialysis sessions, shunt ...

Measurement of flow of cerebrospinal fluid in shunts by transcutaneous thermal convection. Technical note.

With the goal of developing a practical method of performing noninvasive measurements of flow in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunts, transcutaneous thermal convection CSF shunt flow measurement was investigated using dimensional analysis, numerical modeling, and bench testing. Using appropriate manufacturing practices and controls, a microcontroller-based device was designed, constructed, and cli...

Efficacy of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty in the management of chronic hemodialysis patients.

Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) has gained wide acceptance as an effective technique for the dilatation of stenoses in the arterial tree. We evaluated the long-term results of vascular access in a group undergoing hemodialysis, in particular the effects of PTA. Twenty-four percutaneous procedures were performed on 18 patients. Detection was based on physical examination, flow rate m...

Direct Visualization and Quantitation of CSF flow in Shunts

Introduction Diversion of excessive cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) from hydrocephalic brains by shunting is, in many cases, a life saving procedure. The down side of shunting is high failure rate (40% in the first year, and about 10% annually thereafter). Consequently, about 43% of the estimated 40,000 shunting procedures performed annually in the US alone are for shunt replacement. A study of imp...
