From Likelihood to Plausibility

چکیده

Several authors have explained that the like lihood ratio measures the strength of the evi dence represented by observations in statisti cal problems. This idea works fine when the goal is to evaluate the strength of the avail able evidence for a simple hypothesis versus another simple hypothesis. However, the ap plicability of this idea is limited to simple hypotheses because the likelihood function is primarily defined on points simple hy potheses of the parameter space. In this paper we define a general weight of evidence that is applicable to both simple and compos ite hypotheses. It is based on the Dempster Shafer concept of plausibility and is shown to be a generalization of the likelihood ratio. Functional models are of a fundamental im portance for the general weight of evidence proposed in this paper. The relevant con cepts and ideas are explained by means of a familiar urn problem and the general analysis of a real-world medical problem is presented.

Book Review: "Developing Expertise Through Experience"

The book ‘Developing expertise through experience’consists of twenty chapters written by language educators. Alan Maley has edited the book. The writers of the chapters have written their stories and experiences about learning English and being an Educator with regard to the notion of ‘sense of plausibility’ defined by Prabhu. Prabhu explains that plausibility in pedagogy is teachers’ intuition...

Determinants of Adjective-Noun Plausibility

This paper explores the determinants of adjective-noun plausibility by using correlation analysis to compare judgements elicited from human subjects with five corpus-based variables: co-occurrence frequency of the adjective-noun pair, noun frequency, conditional probability of the noun given the adjective, the log-likelihood ratio, and Resnik’s (1993) selectional association measure. The highes...

A Likelihood Aproach to Diagnostic Tests in Clinical Medicine

• This paper presents a pure likelihood approach to statistical inference and its relation to diagnostic tests in clinical medicine. The standard antagonistic frequentist approaches of Fisher and Neyman–Pearson–Wald, and the Bayesian perspective are discussed. We advocate that in medicine, usually, the likelihood is the only source of information available. Also, it is shown that there is no di...

Testing for the Monotone Likelihood Ratio Assumption

Monotonicity of the likelihood ratio for conditioned densities is a common technical assumption in economic models. But we have found no empirical tests for its plausibility. This paper develops such a test based on the theory of order-restricted inference, which is robust with respect to the correlation structure of the distributions being compared. We apply the test to study the technology re...

A Semantics for Possibility Theory Based on Likelihoods

In this paper, a semantic basis for Possibility Theory based on likelihood functions is presented. In some cases, possibilities have been considered as approximations of Shafer plausibility measures. This approximation exchanges exactness of plausibility values for the simplicity of use of possibility values. In this paper, a different direction is followed. Possibility measures are considered ...
