چکیده

The importance of competition in determining species coexistence has been much debated. A phylogenetic analysis of sedges indicates that competitive exclusion may inhibit co-occurrence among closely related species, but not among more distant relatives.

Morphology captures diet and locomotor types in rodents

To understand the functional meaning of morphological features, we need to relate what we know about morphology and ecology in a meaningful, quantitative framework. Closely related species usually share more phenotypic features than distant ones, but close relatives do not necessarily have the same ecologies. Rodents are the most diverse group of living mammals, with impressive ecomorphological...

Insiders and Outsiders in Baluchistan: Western and Indigenous Perspectives on Ecology and Development

We have generally become used to the idea that ethnographers are a part of what they study. They live in the community they study and participate in the events and (ideally) in the social and cultural processes which they analyze and interpret. They cannot stand either theoretically or methodologically outside what they study even though we do not perhaps all of us always manage to follow throu...

Geographic range size is predicted by plant mating system.

Species' geographic ranges vary enormously, and even closest relatives may differ in range size by several orders of magnitude. With data from hundreds of species spanning 20 genera in 15 families, we show that plant species that autonomously reproduce via self-pollination consistently have larger geographic ranges than their close relatives that generally require two parents for reproduction. ...

Physiological, Ecological, and Evolutionary Consequences of the Hydrodynamics of Individual Organisms

Processes operating at the level of individual organisms can determine the properties of populations, communities, and ecosystems. This "white paper" focuses on how a mechanistic, organismal-level understanding of mass and momentum exchange between marine organisms and the surrounding water can provide predictive insights to studies in ocean ecology. Conversley, the evolution of organsimal-leve...
