Continuous Modelling of Verse Lengths in Welsh and Gaelic Metrical Psalmody
نویسنده
چکیده
Twenty 17 th century metrical psalms (ten in Welsh and ten in Scottish Gaelic) were used to investigate the suitability of the Zipf-Alekseev function for modelling verse lengths in these Celtic languages. Good fits were obtained for both languages; however, the parameter c was always negligible, hence future work might consider using the simple power function, if this proves to be the case more generally. Future work needs to look at a broader sample of authors, dates, genres, etc. in order to arrive at a full synergetic model for verse lengths in Welsh and Scottish Gaelic.

ZeuScansion: a tool for scansion of English poetry
We present a finite state technology based system capable of performing metrical scansion of verse written in English. Scansion is the traditional task of analyzing the lines of a poem, marking the stressed and non-stressed elements, and dividing the line into metrical feet. The system’s workflow is composed of several subtasks designed around finite state machines that analyze verse by perform...
متن کاملThe prosodic word as a unit in poetic meter
The epic decasyllable is a traditional South Slavic folk metrical form. The poems created in this rich oral tradition are of a highly formulaic nature, and possess a discernible metrical organization. My focus will be on the so-called Serbo-Croatian poems within this tradition (cf. Maretić 1907, 1935, Jakobson 1933, 1952), which have been documented in numerous volumes of verse. Among the most ...
متن کاملFaithfulness and Componentiality in Metrics*
The field of generative metrics attempts to characterize the tacit knowledge of fluent participants in a metrical tradition. An adequate metrical analysis will characterize the set of phonological structures constituting well-formed verse in a particular tradition and meter. Structures that meet this criterion are termed metrical. An adequate analysis will also specify differences of complexity...
متن کاملIsometric Lineation in English Texts: An Empirical and Mathematical Examination of its Character and Consequences
In this paper we build on earlier observations and theory regarding word length frequency and sequential distribution to develop a mathematical characterization of some of the language features distinguishing isometrically lineated text from unlineated text, in other words the features distinguishing isometrical verse from prose. It is shown that the frequency of Qn of n syllables making comple...
متن کاملA computational linguistic approach to Spanish Golden Age Sonnets: metrical and semantic aspects
Several computational linguistics techniques are applied to analyze a large corpus of Spanish sonnets from the 16th and 17th centuries. The analysis is focused on metrical and semantic aspects. First, we are developing a hybrid scansion system in order to extract and analyze rhythmical or metrical patterns. The possible metrical patterns of each verse are extracted with language-based rules. Th...
