Ternary Solutions under Stratospheric Conditions

چکیده
The reaction probabilities of NzO~ and C10N02 with HZO on liquid sulfuric acid surfaces have been reexamined to survey the effect of HNO~ on these two hydrolysis rates, using a fast flow reactor coupled to a chemical ionimtion mass spectrometer. The. measurements were cankd out by maintaining constant H20 and HNO~ partial pressures and by varying temperatures between 227 and 195 K in order to mimic compositions representat ive of stratospheric aerosols. For experiments excluding HNOJ, the reaction probability of NZ05 hydrolysis was found to be near 0.1, independent of temperature and H$Od content, This is in agreement with results previously measured under similar conditions. In the presence of gaseous HNOJ at stratospheric concentrations, the reaction probability y was observed to decrease from about 0.09 at 218 K to about 0.02-0.03 at 195 K for P}lzo = 3.8x1041.Ox 10-3 Torr, showing that incorporation of HNO~ into liquid sulfuric acid greatly retarded the NzO~ hydrolysis. The CIONOZ reaction with HZO on liquid sulfuric acid, on the other hand, did not appmr to be affected by the presence of HNO~. (Submitted to GRL, Dec. 15, 1994)

Physical Chemistry of Acid Systems Relevant to Stratospheric Ozone Depletion by Judy
Thermodynamic properties of various binary H 2S0 4/H 20, HNO3/H 20 and HCl/H20 as well as ternary H 2S0 4/HNO3/H 20 solutions were studied using differential scanning calorimetry. Stable as well as metastable hydrates were identified. The supercooling trend of the solutions was also studied for both bulk and small samples. In general, H2S0 4/H 20 solutions supercooled more readily than the othe...

Introduction Conclusions References Tables Figures Back Close Abstract Introduction Conclusions References Tables Figures Back Close Abstract In December 2001 and 2002 in situ aerosol measurements were made from balloon-borne platforms within polar stratospheric clouds (PSC) consisting of supercooled ternary solutions, nitric acid trihydrate and ice. Particle size (radius >0.15 µm) and number c...
متن کاملA model for studying the composition and chemical effects of stratospheric aerosols
We developed polynomial expressions for the temperature dependence of the mean binary and water activity coefficients for H2SO4 and HNO3 solutions. These activities were used in an equilibrium model to predict the composition of stratospheric aerosols under a wide range of environmental conditions. For typical concentrations of H20, H2SO4, HNO3, HCI, HBr, HF, and HOCI in the lower stratosphere,...
متن کاملHomogeneous nucleation of NAD and NAT in liquid stratospheric aerosols: insufficient to explain denitrification
The nucleation of NAD and NAT from HNO3/H2O and HNO3/H2SO4/H2O solution droplets is investigated both theoretically and experimentally with respect to the formation of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs). Our analysis shows that homogeneous NAD and NAT nucleation from liquid aerosols is insufficient to explain the number densities of large nitric acid containing particles recently observed in the...

A new theoretical model based on the local composition concept (TNRF-mNRTL model) was proposed to express the short-range contribution of the excess Gibbs energy for the solutions containing polymer and electrolyte. This contribution of interaction along with the long-range contribution of interaction (Pitzer-Debye-Hückel equation), configurational entropy of mixing (Flory-Huggins relation)...
