Thrombocytosis and infections in childhood.

چکیده
In both children and adults, thrombocytosis is usually defined as a platelet count of more than 450 10/ L. As there are many primary and secondary causes, as well as false or “spurious” conditions mimicking thrombocytosis, establishing the cause requires considering clinical features and hematologic parameters. Pediatric primary thrombocytosis is very rare, but reactive thrombocytosis (RT) can be frequently observed in children with infections, iron deficiency, tissue damage, hemolysis, autoimmune diseases, malignancies, and other causes of an acute-phase response. The incidence of secondary forms due to infections is significantly higher in childhood than in adulthood, and infections are the main cause of pediatric RT, with reported incidence rates ranging from 37% to 78%. This wide range may be explained by the cutoff platelet count, the study population (in-patients, outpatients, or both), and the median age of the enrolled subjects.

[Extreme reactive thrombocytosis in a healthy 6 year-old child].
Thrombocytosis is usually a casual finding in children. Reactive or secondary thrombocytosis is the more common form, being the infections diseases the most prevalent cause of it. Regarding the number of platelets there are four degrees of thrombocytosis; in its extreme degree the number of platelets exceeds 1,000,000/mm(3). We describe a case of extreme reactive thrombocytosis in a healthy 6-y...

Thrombocytosis is a frequent finding in hemograms obtained from hospitalized and ambulatory children due to the widespread use of automated blood cell counters. Pediatricians are commonly puzzled in cases of thrombocytosis to determine the underlying cause and the need for therapy. The purpose of this review is to assist the general pediatrician into dealing with this common hematological findi...
متن کاملJak-2 mutation frequency in patients with thrombocytosis
Background: We aimed to investigate the etiologic causes and the existence of Janus kinase 2 mutation (JAK2) in cases with thrombocytosis. Methods: In this retrospective study, patients, who were admitted to hematology clinic with thrombocytosis between 2013 and 2015, were investigated in terms of the etiological causes of thrombocytosis and the existence of JAK2 mutation. Results: We retrospe...
متن کاملSecondary thrombocytosis.
To estimate the incidence and causes of secondary thrombocytosis in children, a 12 month study of all patients attending a children's hospital and discovered to have a platelet count over two times the upper normal limit (> 800 x 10(9)/l) was undertaken. Data so obtained were analysed both separately and together with those from two previous studies to gain as broad a perspective as possible. O...
