Energy systems in transition: perspectives for the diffusion of small-scale wood pellet heating technology
نویسندگان
چکیده
Promising small-scale wood pellet heating systems with sizable market potentials have started to penetrate the residential heating market in Europe and elsewhere. Despite significant technological progress, cost reduction, improved convenience and reliability, and reduced environmental impact, diffusion of such systems will nonetheless take time. Framework and market conditions, and especially drivers and barriers and the overall merits of such systems in comparison to alternative solutions, need to be properly understood by policy-makers and entrepreneurs for the successful promotion of this technology. In this article we cover three important aspects related to small-scale pellet heating systems. First, we summarise recent technological, socio-economic, and institutional trends. Second, we report on results from a comparative analysis of the direct and indirect external costs and benefits of this technology. Third, we discuss the usefulness of various diffusion modelling approaches used in economics in the light of the technology scrutinised and existing data constraints.

Method of Evaluation of Efficiency Improvement Potential for District Heating Systems with Focus on Variable Speed Centrifugal Pumps
The goal of this research is the derivation of method for evaluation of efficiency improvement potential for district heating systems with focus on variable speed centrifugal pump. The effectiveness of the usage of the proportional pressure control is compared with the constant pressure control. This is why, energy calculation analyses have been realized for variable speed centrifugal pumps, an...
متن کاملDynamic Mechanical Analysis of Compatibilizer Effect on the Mechanical Properties of Wood Flour-High-Density Polyethylene Composites
In this study, effect of MAPE (maleic anhydride polyethylene) as the compatibilizer on the mechanical properties of wood-flour polyethylene composites has been investigated by using Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). Composites were made at 25% and 50% by weight fiber contents and 1% and 2% compatibilizer respectively. Controls were also made at the same fiber contents without the compatibilize...
متن کاملThe (up)scaling of Renewable Energy Technologies: Experiences from the Austrian Biomass District Heating Niche
The successful diffusion of sustainable technologies is termed “upscaling” in the transition studies literature. This paper maintains that upscaling is an ambiguous notion that suggests that technology diffusion processes follow a linear trend from small-scale pilot plants to industrial-scale facilities. On the ground, however, sociotechnical configurations are implemented at a variety of scale...
متن کاملEnergy Pellets: A Heating Fuel Resource for North Carolina Farms and Homes
Increased prices for nonrenewable heating fuels (such as propane, heating oil, and natural gas) have residential and farm consumers seeking more sustainable solutions to their heating needs. Price increases among these fuels will remain a trend as a combination of decreased reserves and increased demand continues to limit supply (EIA, 2012). Pellets produced from abundant biomass sources—such a...
متن کاملCo-combustion of Biosolids with Wood Pellets in a Wood Pellet Stove
Co-combustion of biosolids with coal or other biomass fuel can play a significant role in combustion facilities for energy production and waste management policy context. This paper presents the results of an experimental study to investigate the use of biosolids for co-combustion with wood pellets in a wood pellet stove. Fuel property, gas emissions and stove efficiency are compared. In regard...
