Simulation of the Coevolution of Insects and Flowers
نویسنده
چکیده
Flowers need insects for their pollination and insects rely on the nectar and the pollen as a food resource. But instead of visiting all flowers, the insects limit their visits to a small number. This paper presents a simulation of the behavior of the insects which results in a specialized perception of blossom colors and fragrances by the insects. A coevolution can be observed only based on simple interactions modified over generations by a genetic algorithm. The results show a mutual benefit expressed in more rewards for the insects and more efficient pollination of the flowers.

Canola (Brassica napus) is one of the important oil seed crops cultivated in many parts of Iran. One of the main problems of seed production of canola is pollination and fertilization of flowers. Insects are the major pollinators. متن کاملFlowering and fruit set in olive: a review. Esmaeil Seifi1*, Jenny Guerin2, Brent Kaiser2 and Margaret Sedgley3
Olive is one of the most ancient fruit trees and has been cultivated for its oil for thousands of years. A mature olive tree produces about 500,000 flowers. They are borne on inflorescences termed panicles. The number of flowers and their distribution on the inflorescence are specific for each cultivar but can change from year to year. The flower position on the inflorescence affects its gender...
متن کاملAbundance of adult hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae) on different flowering plants
Encouraging natural enemies by growing attractive plants is considered an effective method of pest control in organic farming. However, it is important to identify which flowers best attract beneficial insects. In this study, relative attractiveness of 16 species of flowering plants to adult hoverflies was assessed by conducting timed observations of feeding-visit frequencies. The experiments w...
متن کاملFigs, Wasps, Gophers, and Lice: A Computational Exploration of Coevolution
The prescient thought experiment that Darwin describes in the Origin of Species is, in fact, borne out in bees and flowers (as documented in the book The Sex Life of Flowers [10]). One particularly interesting example is the symbiotic relationship between figs, their tiny flowers, and the miniature wasps that pollinate them. The story goes something like this: The flowers or “florets” of a fig ...
