On water vapor, surface temperature and the greenhouse e ect|a statistical analysis of tropical-mean data

چکیده
Water-vapor feedback is one of the important factors that determine the response of the atmosphere to surface warming. To take into account the compensating drying e ects in downdraft regions, averaging over the whole tropics is necessary. However, this operation drastically reduces the number of degrees of freedom and raises question concerning the statistical signi cance of any correlative results obtained using observational data. A more involved statistical analysis is performed here, using multiple data sets, including the global water-vapor datasets of SSM/I (column water), UTH (upper tropospheric relative humidity), the TOVS retrieved upper tropospheric speci c humidity, and the surface temperature data from the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis dataset. The tropical-mean correlations between speci c humidity and the surface temperature are found to be positive and shown to be statistically signi cant. This conclusion holds even when the averaging is done on the natural logarithm of the upper tropospheric water-vapor content. The e ect on the tropical mean Outgoing Long-Wave Radiation is also discussed.

متن کاملObserved and simulated seasonal co-variations of outgoing longwave radiation spectrum and surface temperature
[1] We analyze the seasonal variations of Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) accompanying the variations in sea surface temperature (SST) from satellite observations and model simulations, focusing on the tropical oceans where the two quantities are strikingly anti-correlated. A spectral perspective of this ‘‘super-greenhouse effect’’ is provided, which demonstrates the roles of water vapor line...
متن کاملAnalysis of temporal and spatial correlation between precipitable water vapor retrievals from AIRS satellite sensor and 29 synoptic station measurements in Iran
Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) is one of the most important quantities in meteorology and climate studies. PWV in Earth's atmosphere can be measured by Sun-photometer, the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), and radiosonde from surface, atmosphere and space-based systems, respectively. In this paper, we use PWV measured by Sun-photometer located in Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Scien...
متن کاملA Hiatus of the Greenhouse Effect
The rate at which the global average surface temperature is increasing has slowed down since the end of the last century. This study investigates whether this warming hiatus results from a change in the well-known greenhouse effect. Using long-term, reliable, and consistent observational data from the Earth's surface and the top of the atmosphere (TOA), two monthly gridded atmospheric and surfa...
متن کاملMining geophysical parameters through decision-tree analysis to determine correlation with tropical cyclone development
Correlations between geophysical parameters and tropical cyclones are essential in understanding and predicting the formation of tropical cyclones. Previous studies show that sea surface temperature and vertical wind shear significantly influence the formation and frequent changes of tropical cyclones. This paper presents the utilization of a new approach, data mining, to discover the collectiv...
