quality), and CT effects, which contributed 42% of the increase in yield. CT also contributed 65% of the increase in milk protein concentration and 100% of the increase in conversion efficiency, but did not contribute to the increase in intake or decrease in milk fat concentration. Lotus has potential as a forage for dairy cows, although its low herbage yield compared with traditional forages necessitates further investigation of management options for inclusion of Lotus into the farm system. Table: Means (30 cows) and SEDs of combined data from all three trials.

Effect of various levels of forage and form of diet on rumen development and growth in calves.
The effect of form of starter grain (coarse vs. ground) and inclusion of various levels of hay on body weight gain and rumen development was evaluated. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of form of diet and forage inclusion on intake, growth, feed efficiency, and weaning age in dairy calves. Diets consisted of commercial coarse starter (C), ground starter (G), coarse starter...
متن کاملSward Factors Influence on Pasture Dry Matter Intake of Grazing Dairy Cows: A Review
Successful pasture-based milk production systems pivot on balancing dairy cows’ feed requirements with seasonal and annual fluctuations in pasture production. In order to maximise cow production from grazing dairy systems, it is necessary to reach an efficient utilization of grazed grass for feeding cows and the development of appropriate grazing management systems designed to maximize daily pa...
متن کاملInteraction Between Crude Protein Level and Rumen Protected Amino Acids in Starter Diet on Performance of Dairy Calves
BACKGROUND: A limited number of studies have investigated the inclusion of amino acids in calf starter. OBJECTIVES: This study was aimed to evaluate different levels of crude protein in starter and supplement- ing some protected amino acids on efficiency, health status and blood metabolites of dairy calves and to com- pare it with unprotected amino acids. <st...
متن کاملInteractions of alfalfa hay and sodium propionate on dairy calf performance and rumen development.
The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effects of different levels of alfalfa hay (AH) and sodium propionate (Pro) added to starter diets of Holstein calves on growth performance, rumen fermentation characteristics, and rumen development. Forty-two male Holstein calves (40±2kg of birth weight) were used in a complete randomized design with a 3×2 factorial arrangement of treatme...
متن کاملEffects of hydrolyzed spray dried red blood cells in milk replacer on calf intake, body weight gain, and efficiency.
An alternative protein ingredient based on spray-dried, hydrolyzed red blood cells was evaluated in calf milk replacers. Two experiments were conducted to determine the value of the ingredient on intake, growth, and feed efficiency in dairy calves. In experiment 1, Holstein bull calves (n = 120) were fed calf milk replacer containing 0, 11, 22, or 43% of crude protein as spray dried hydrolyzed ...
