چکیده
Background The ubiquity of nickel in the environment and its common presence in food and water mean that humans are constantly exposed to nickel. Although nickel is not acutely toxic at low levels, it is a carcinogen and has been linked to cellular oxidative stress [1]. Soils that develop on serpentinite, a metamorphic rock type derived from ultramafic igneous rocks (and the state rock of California), are well known for their elevated concentrations of nickel and chromium [2]. The degree of nickel accumulation in serpentinite soil horizons, thus its bioavailability to plants, is controlled by soil characteristics such as pH, amount of organic matter, clay and iron oxide content, and competitive adsorption with other dissolved species [3-7]. These biogeochemical factors are influenced strongly by climate, rainfall, vegetation, and weathering of primary ultramafic minerals. In locations where serpentinite and ultramafic soils have been used for agriculture, nickel transfer to plants has been documented [8], with potential transfer through the food chain to humans.

Pollution intensity of nickel in agricultural soil of Hamedan region
In the recent years, agricultural soils have received more chemicals in various forms for higher yields. This may result in the accumulation of metals in soils which subsequently may be transferred into the agricultural crops. In the present investigation, nickel content of 58 composite soil samples and also agricultural crops, is studied. Ni in samples of soil and agricultural products were ex...
متن کاملChromium and nickel in Pteridium aquilinum from environments with various levels of these metals
Pteridium aquilinum is a ubiquitous species considered to be one of the plants most resistant to metals. This fern meets the demands for a good bioindicator to improve environmental control. Therefore, it was of interest to survey the accumulation of Cr and Ni in the rhizome and fronds of this species collected in Lower Silesia (SW Poland) of serpentinite rich in Cr and Ni and granite poor in t...
متن کاملEnvironmental Investigation and Spatial Distribution of Heavy Metals in the Street Dust of Ahvaz City
Dusts contain heavy metals such as Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd and As that can threat humanchr('39')s health and environment. Therefore, the spatial distribution of heavy metals concentration and soil pollution monitoring and environmental quality protection seem to be essential. To assess heavy metals pollution level in Ahvaz street dust, 115 street dust samples were collected from main pedestrians. Th...
متن کاملOrigin and spatial distribution of metals in agricultural soils
Presence of toxic metals in agricultural soils can impose adverse health impact on consumers. The main purpose of this study was to determine spatial distribution of elements Fe, Sb, Mn in agriculture soils and crops of Hamedan Province in Iran. Soil samples (0-20 cm depth) were collected from an area of 2831 km2. Iron, Antimony and Manganese in samples of soil and agricultural crop...

Aqueous concentrations of nickel in the southern component of San Francisco Bay (South Bay) have periodically exceeded the water-quality criteria (8.2 ppb Ni) established in accordance with the EPA’s Clean Water Act. Nickel-rich serpentinite formations around the San Francisco Bay-estuary, particularly South Bay, are eroded, transported and accumulated in estuarine sediments, providing a natura...
